نصرchampioned الحَقthe truth بِالقَناwith lances وَالسنانand the spearhead
نصر الحَق بِالقَنا وَالسنان
سَيدa master ماno لهfor him بِدُنياكin your world ثانan equal
سَيد ما له بِدُنياك ثان
He championed truth with lances and spearheads—
a master without equal in your world.
نورillumined الدينthe faith بِالكِتابwith the Book فَأَضحىand thus became
نور الدين بِالكِتاب فَأَضحى
بَهجةdelight الحَقthe truth وَالهُدىand guidance وَالزَمانand time
بَهجة الحَق وَالهُدى وَالزَمان
He illumined the faith with the Book, and thus became
the delight of truth, guidance, and time.
نحرslaughtered المُشركينthe polytheists بِالسَيفwith the sword لَماwhen
نحر المُشركين بِالسَيف لَما
غَمصواthey scorned الحَقthe truth بِالهَوىthrough passion وَالتوانيand indolence
غَمصوا الحَق بِالهَوى وَالتواني
He slaughtered the polytheists with the sword when
they scorned truth through passion and indolence.
ناحَتwailed الغانياتthe beautiful women فيin الدورthe houses حَتّىuntil
ناحَت الغانيات في الدور حَتّى
عَمرواthey filled بِالنواحwith lamentation تِلكَthose المَغانيabodes
عَمروا بِالنواح تِلكَ المَغاني
The beautiful women wailed in the houses until
they filled those abodes with lamentation.
ندبتهsummoned him إِلىto القِتالbattle المَثانيthe oft-repeated verses
ندبته إِلى القِتال المَثاني
وَكِتابand a Book يقراis read بِلاwithout ترجمانan interpreter
وَكِتاب يقرا بِلا ترجمان
He was summoned to battle by the oft-repeated verses
and a Book read without an interpreter.
نوؤهhis rain قَدindeed همىpoured down فأخصبand so grew fertile مِنهُfrom it
نوؤه قَد همى فأخصب مِنهُ
كُلevery محلbarren tract وَلاحَand gleamed كُلevery جمانpearl
كُل محل وَلاحَ كُل جمان
His rain poured down, and through it grew fertile
every barren tract, and every pearl gleamed.
نامslept عَماheedless of what أَتىhe came بِهِwith it كُلevery جافcallous person
نام عَما أَتى بِهِ كُل جاف
فَثَوىso dwelt فيin عَذابهhis torment كُلevery جانsinner
فَثَوى في عَذابه كُل جان
Every callous soul slept, heedless of what he brought,
so every sinner dwelt in his torment.
نَصهُhis text ناسخabrogating لِنَصof a text سواهother than it
نَصهُ ناسخ لِنَص سواه
وَبناهand his edifice علاrose عَلىabove كُلevery بانbuilder
وَبناه علا عَلى كُل بان
His text abrogates every other text,
and his edifice rose above every builder’s work.
ناصحa sincere counselor لِلوَرىto humankind رَؤوفtender-hearted رَحيمmerciful
ناصح لِلوَرى رَؤوف رَحيم
مُشفقcompassionate ناطقspeaking بِخَيرwith the best of المَعانيmeanings
مُشفق ناطق بِخَير المَعاني
A sincere counselor to humankind, tender-hearted and merciful,
compassionate, voicing the noblest meanings.
نَصرَmay grant victory اللَهGod منwhoever يصليinvokes blessings عَلَيهupon him
نَصرَ اللَه من يصلي عَلَيه
وَجَزاهand reward him حَديقةa garden فيin الجنانthe gardens of Paradise
وَجَزاه حَديقة في الجنان
May God grant victory to whoever invokes blessings upon him,
and reward him with a garden in Paradise.
