    and glory among the Arabs of noble stock.

    by al-Batul’s father, the pure and purified.

    which soar above the star al-Suha and Jupiter?

    A house whose rank in every deed is

    lofty, and whose dais has never been surpassed.

    شتان بَينَ مطول وَمُقصر

    They towered with piety at its greatest height;

    how far apart the one who reaches far and the one who falls short!

    And they inherited the secret of prophethood, noble heir

    from noble forebear, from noble forebear, from noble forebear.

    هُم طاهر عَن طاهر من طاهر

    And they purified themselves of every foul defilement;

    they are pure, from the pure, from the pure.

    devoted to God, some proclaiming His oneness, others His greatness.

    For revelation is recited throughout their homes,

    while people are either clapping or playing pipes.

    such is courage, not the courage of Antar;

    تِلكَ المَكانة لا مَكانة قَيصَر

    such is distinction, not the distinction of Ahnaf;

    such is stature, not the stature of Caesar.

    لَولا مَديد عَديدها لم يقصر

    Their merits towered, so my imagination fell short;

    were their number not so vast, it would not fall short.

    My apologies to you, O Alid lords,

    of prophetic lineage—how noble a company!—

    for a praise-poem that has not captured a single one

    of your thousand, since even one of yours defies reckoning.

    فَأطل بِمدحهم هديت وَأكثر

    Grant it, my heart: you are a slave to their slaves;

    so prolong their praise—may you be guided—and say more.
