The lightning of Najd traveled by night while the sky was dark,

and stirred a blazing fire between my sides.

It stripped the robes of sleep from my eye's body,

as though I were a consecrated pilgrim at longing's appointed station.

God bless that night traveler, who confided to my heart

tales of longing that a lovesick lover had related.

And it reminded me of a time at Ramah that had pelted

my misfortunes with bygone hours, themselves stars,

and a life spent between Silʿ and Hajir,

in sweetest ease of mind, while the envious slept.

    إِذا ما انثَنى فَهوَ السنان المفوم

    A fresh, slender bough exchanges words with me;

when he bends, he is a broad-bladed spearhead.

Youth's bloom sets him swaying; and if he gazes,

a lion appears between his languid eyelids.

He denies me wine from his sweet mouth,

which I deem lawful—it is the sealed wine.

O lightning of Najd, how did you leave my neighbors

at Hazwa, though they have pitched camp between my ribs?

By your worth, tell us of the moringa trees and the sand dune,

for my patience has departed, and my tears are crimson dye.

And if you come to Silʿ, ask after my heart, for it

met its end there—you will find out and know.

When the caller of union calls, I answer him

with 'Here I am! Truly, I am love-distraught and enamored.'

Shall I enter through the Gate of Peace at evening

into a sanctuary where disloyalty is forbidden?

    أَطوف لركن فَهوَ فَرض محتم

    I perform the circumambulation of arrival, then turn back;

I circle a corner, for it is a binding duty.

And at union's Arafat we are gathered together,

and sorrow's armies are driven from us and routed.

And at noon we cast longing's pebbles, for

the devils of the reproachers are pelted only with fire.

Will you hasten with us between the Marwah of their dwelling

    and their Safa, and—

And we slaughter our hearts as an offering to the beloved,

for death from aversion and separation is more dreadful and grievous.

And we recognize those domes as belonging to masters,

through whom the Sacred House and Zamzam are known:

kings turbaned with the crowns of prophethood—

    and who is like them?
