Cease your reproach; you are not the first of my reproachers.

How much longing lies in the heart, never fading!

Do you blame one whose heart passionate love has possessed?

Then go, for you are far removed from love.

Men, defend me against a graceful maiden

Who shoots with the eyelids of a kohl-eyed gazelle.

And she drew away—what tear did not fall?

In every faculty of mine and every joint.

Shining out from the deep night of her dark tresses.

The keenest spear in battle, that spear would have no effect.

O mistress of the smooth cheek, and companion of the

Slender waist, draw near and be coy.

How can I reach your fruit, when before it stand

Blue spearheads in a vast, teeming host?

Suppose, then, that I face them alone,

    With my mighty resolves and the strength of my frame;

With what reason can I face you, when I,

If I glimpse your radiant face, lose my reason?

    لَك في القُلوب مَنازل لَم تَنزل

    You have a special place within my heart;

You have stations in hearts that have never fallen.

Spread my words to her and carry them.

And there we have landmarks that remain familiar.

Were two branches, one kissing, the other kissed.

Fortune soared, and the watcher was far away.

    Until time revealed its fog,

And its ghouls ran wild within my home,

A massive boulder tumbling down from on high.

Whose sweetest taste is like the juice of colocynth.

May your milk never flow, O time, for I am

A servant of Muhammad's household and the sons of Ali.

Shall I be wronged, Abd Allah? This is a cry for help

Against the blows of this treacherous age—when you are there for me?

Can injustice strike me, when you are my recourse,

And harm befall me, when your door is my refuge?

O son of nobles who soar toward the heights,

And journey toward the finest station,

And son of the trustworthy, who hold fast to piety,

And drink from the first pool.

    Radiant above al-Simak al-A'zal.

    وَفَضائل جَلت وَتَفصيل جلي

    Learning, insight, and dazzling excellence,

    And lofty virtues and lucid exposition;

And a hand that pours forth, never stinting, for all time,

    And reaches far with all-embracing, far-reaching generosity;

Flowing smoothly like a mellow drink.

White of face, noble in ancestry,

No, by God, the One, the Unique, the Most High!

Favors with which you have garlanded me, earlier ones

Joined with later ones, never unknown among humankind.

Like the thirsty one's longing for the sweetest watering place.
