أهيلdear folk النَقاal-Naqa (the sandhill) هَلis there? مِنany سَبيلway إِلىto اللقاmeeting
فَقَدfor indeed شَفنيwore me thin طُولlong duration النَوىseparation وَبَرانيand wasted me away
O dear folk of al-Naqa, is there a way to meet?
My friends, is there any way to meet again?
For long separation has worn me thin and wasted me away.
For yearning has wearied me and distance has ravaged me
وَليand I have كَبدa liver حَرىburning إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle ذكرتكمI recalled you
تَأَججflared up فيهاwithin it جَمرهاits embers فَكَوانيand so seared me
And I have a burning liver; whenever I recall you,
And whenever I remember you
Its embers flare within it and so sear me.
my burning heart flares up and torments me
وَلَمand did not أَنسَforget يَوماًever بِالعَقيقat al-Aqiq عُهودكمyour pledges
وَداعيand the summons التَدانيdrawing near لِلوُصولto union دَعانيcalled me
And never have I forgotten your pledges at al-Aqiq,
Never for a day have I forgotten our enduring covenant in ‘Aqiq
And the summons of nearness called me to union.
and longing for union called me to seek you out
I share the cup with you وَالكاشِحونand the foes عَلىupon غُصنيmy branch
وَعاذلتيand my female reproacher فَوقabove السَماواتthe heavens تَرانيshe sees me
I share the cup with you, while foes are upon my branch,
I call on you while the cooing doves coo in my branches
And my reproacher sees me above the heavens.
and my reproacher above the firmaments watches over me
سَقىmay He water اللَهGod أَياماًdays سقيتI was given to drink بِهاduring them المُنىwishes

May God water the days when I was given my wishes to drink,
May God water the days when, with blood-stained palm,
By a henna-dyed palm adorned with fingertips.
I sated desires decked out in robes
وَلَستand I am not بِدارat all aware إِذwhen رَمَتنيstruck me يَدthe hand النَوىseparation
بِسبعwith seven رمينthey hurled الجَمرthe embers أَمor بِثَمانwith eight
And I do not know, when separation's hand struck me,
I have no abode since the hand of fate has cast me
Whether with seven that hurled embers or with eight.
with seven or eight casts of glowing embers
وَقَدand indeed صرتI have become مِنfrom بعدafter الحَبيبthe beloved وَقُربهand his nearness
كَأَنيas though I were الثُرياthe Pleiades وَالحَبيبand the beloved يَمانيYemeni
And after the beloved's company and closeness, I have become
And after the beloved and his nearness I have become
As though I were the Pleiades and the beloved were Yemeni.
as if I were the Pleiades while the beloved were Yemen
وَلَمand did not أَنسهforget him يَوماًever وَإِنeven though طالَgrew long بعدهhis absence
فَقولواso say لهُto him بِاللَهby God كَيفَhow نَسانيhe forgot me
And never have I forgotten him, though his absence has grown long.
Never for a day have I forgotten him, though long his absence
So say to him, by God: how has he forgotten me?
So say to him, for God’s sake, “Why have you forgotten me?”

Peace upon the master al-Amin and his son;
Greetings to the Trustworthy Patron and his son
For longing for them has struck me between the ribs.
for yearning for them has lodged arrows in my ribs
