And a gray dove sang above her green boughs,
The green leaves sang
So carnelian tears flowed into the hollow at the throat.
And tears of passion streamed from my throat
إِذاwhen رجعتshe trilled فيamong الدَوحthe great trees بِالمَدwith lengthening وَالقصرand shortening

When she trilled among the great trees, lengthening and shortening her notes,
When I returned to the sand dunes and country palaces
I remembered, and the sorrowful find solace in remembrance;
I remembered and the sorrowful find comfort in memories
وَأَرقنيand kept me awake طيفthe phantom الخَيالthe vision الَّذيthat يَسريtravels by night

And the phantom vision that roams by night kept me awake.
The phantom of fantasy that crept
The star of my patience fell when love kept me awake.
Disturbed my star of patience when passion disturbed me

فَياso, O مُهجتيmy heart ذوبيmelt مِنfrom الحُزنgrief وَالجَوىand burning anguish
So I sensed a fire within my ribs and limbs.
I felt a fire in my soul and embers
So, my heart, melt from grief and burning anguish,
Oh my burning innards, melt with sadness and fervor

For a pearl, when separation's estrangement carried her far away,
Like a pearl tossed by the estrangement of my desires
And when, in the darkness, she was like the full moon.
There she was, in the darkness, like the full moon

I thirsted—and thirst is sweet to whoever loves you—
Thirsty, and for those who love you, your love is sweet water
For a draught from the mouth's jewels and the lips' dusky hue.
Just a sip of the essence from your lips and bite

Whenever radiant lightning flashed from the sanctuary,
When will the shining lightning flash from your fever?
I remembered you, and my innards seemed
I remembered you and my insides were as though

From hidden passion to have folded themselves around live coals.
Wrapped in hidden straw, lying on embers
Patience has departed, and tormenting longing has set in.
Patience has passed and fervent longing has come
وَأَوردتand I brought myself to منthrough حبيكmy love for you بَحراًa sea مِنof الرَدىdeath
وَلَمand did not أنسI forget وَالحاديwhile the camel-driver بأظعانناto our caravan حداchanted
And through my love for you, I brought myself to a sea of death.
And I have tasted from your love a sea of misfortune
Nor have I forgotten, as the camel-driver urged our caravan on with song,
I cannot forget the reproacher of our affair

وَباتand spent the night لديكwith you القَلبthe heart فيin ربقةthe noose الأسرof captivity
The morning separation hurried me away from you into the uplands,
Dawn came between us, erecting a barrier
And my heart spent the night with you in captivity's noose.
My heart remains your prisoner in captivity

وَأحملand I carry فيin سرthe hidden depths الجَوارحof the limbs حرهاher heat
I journey and fold her secret within my ribs,
I am captive, folding its secret in my soul
And bear her heat in my limbs' hidden depths.
And carrying in the soul of my soul its heat
لَقَدindeed نقمresented الواشونthe tale-bearers أَمريmy affair وَأَمرهاand her affair
وَقالواand they said نَأَتshe went far away فاخترso choose لنفسكfor yourself غيرهاsomeone other than her
Indeed, the tale-bearers resented my affair and hers,
Those who blame have resented my affair and hers
And said, 'She has gone far away; so choose another for yourself.'
And said “make another choice for yourself”
فَقُلتso I said دَعونيleave me alone لاdo not يَهمكمtrouble you أمريmy affair
هِيshe الظبيةthe gazelle الغَناءnasal-voiced وَالقَلبand the heart دارهاher home
So I said, 'Leave me alone; let my affair not trouble you.'
But I said “do not worry about me”
She is the nasal-voiced gazelle, and the heart is her home,
She is the singing gazelle and my heart is her home

And a sun—but her orbit lies within the heart.
A sun whose orbit is in my heart
She tore the armor of my patience as her aversion grew.
Her aloofness tore the armor of my patience
فَإنيfor indeed I وَإِنeven though كانَتwas بَعيداًfar away مَزارهاthe place of visiting her

لكالهائمsurely like the lovesick wanderer المضنىthe worn-out one بِهاby her أبدforever الدهرtime
For I, though her abode is far away,
For I am like the obsessed, bound to her for eternity
Am surely like a lovesick wanderer, worn out by her for all time.
We were both young lovers

شغلتshe was absorbed بعشقيin love of me مثلماjust as شغلتI was absorbed بِهin it
Each of us is a lover, already weakened by passionate longing.
She preoccupied me as I preoccupied her
She was absorbed in love of me, just as I was absorbed in it.
We were worn by the passage of time, her and I
بليناwe were afflicted بتصريفby the vicissitudes الزَمانof time أَناI وَهيand she

We were tried by time's vicissitudes, she and I.
She desires my company just as I crave hers
She loves to meet me, just as I desire

فَياso, O مَنyou whose عَداexceeded bounds فيin اللَومblame وَالعَذلand reproach دأبهhis habitual practice
To visit her, were it not for the distance caused by estrangement.
Oh you whose way is blame and rebuke
So, you whose habit has gone too far in blame and reproach,
Do you reproach the heart of the beloved her heart?
أتعذلdo you reproach منone whose قَلبthe heart الحَبيبةof the beloved قَلبهhis heart
فَكَيفso how يَرىhe sees نصحاًsincere counsel وَقَدwhile already ذابَmelted لُبهhis reason
Do you reproach one whose heart is the beloved's heart?
How can he see advice when his core is melted?
So how can he recognize counsel when his reason has already melted?
And how can you console the soul for one you love
وَكَيفَand how تعزيis consoled النَفسthe soul عَمَّنaway from the one whom تُحبهit loves him

And how can the soul find consolation away from the one it loves,
When she is not destined to have patience in estrangement
If it has not been granted patience in separation?
