A fawn, as though within his smiling mouth
He blossomed as if the smile on his face
Daisy blossoms gleam upon the hills.
Was the scent of fresh basil waving amidst the meadows

He knew not which blush on his cheek was
Is it my eyelid's blood, or the blaze of my burning?
The blood of his fluttering eyelids or the glow of his passionate poems

By bonds of passion or by roads forbidden

Such is the rule of lovers, it's said, that their laws
Rulings that reverse the usual rulings.

Rise, O sweet-voiced gazelle, and head for Rama;
Rise, O most noble of gazelles, to the one I seek
There lie all my aims and desires.
In whom lies my every goal and purpose

Upon the earth, exalted in my station.

What surpassed the musk of a seal throughout the horizons.

And I saw my eye, after its long sleeplessness,
It wasn't a garden I saw nor lover's tryst
Find comfort in the fair favors of the days.
Nor a singing maiden or an embrace from a lad

This was not from a garden I saw there, nor
Nay, but the most blessed rising I saw
From union with a beauty and the embrace of a youth.

Which dawned upon it from where the gazelles were hidden.
In his works of creation and command

Or beheld a landmark firmly set on a lofty peak,
Nay, by God, I'll not be pleased if such virtues
By which we guide through the darkness of delusions.
Are claimed by men of stature and fame
كَذَبتI spoke falsely فَلاso no وَاللَهby God لاnot أَرضىI accept بِأَنthat

I spoke falsely! No, by God, I will not accept that
But he who possesses such glories and grace
He inherits eminence from those people.
Earns them not by mere chance or circumstance

Rather, he acquired those glories only
His forefathers, men of nobility and rank
From every surging sea and pouring rain—

His lordly, noble forefathers, who are
They are the pinnacle of perfection, for they
The essence of eminence and the battalion of Islam.
Are its very essence and lofty abode
وَهُمand they همthey themselves هامare the heads الكَمالof perfection وَإِنَّهُمand indeed they
كَالعَينlike the eye مِنهُof it فيin مَحلthe place الهامof the heads
And they are the very heads of perfection; indeed, they
If you only knew, O critic unfair, who they are
Are like its eye, placed where those heads belong.
You would make excuses and acknowledge my words sincere
لَوif كُنتyou were تَدريto know ياO عَذوليmy reproacher منwho همthey are
لَعَذَرتَنيyou would excuse me وَعَرَفتand would know صدقthe truth كَلاميof my words
If you knew, O my reproacher, who they are,
By God, I'm not ignorant of their station
You would excuse me and know the truth of my words.
But you are blind, intentionally ignoring
وَاللَهby God لَستyou are not بِجاهلignorant لِمحلهمof their rank

بَلrather أَنتَyou أَعمىare blind عَنهُto it أَوor مُتعاميfeigning blindness
By God, you are not ignorant of their rank;
Or, their manifest perfection hid by fate
Rather, you are blind to it, or feigning blindness.
So eyes and minds saw not their meaning clear

Or their utter visibility gave rise to concealment,
They are Al Haydari, Ahmad's noble kin
So the eyes of understanding grew dim before it.
Exalted beings of utmost sublime status
هُمthey are آلthe family of حيدرةHaydara وَبضعةand the flesh of أَحمَدAhmad
ساميexalted above الخَليقةcreation بِالمقامin the station الساميexalted
They are the house of Haydara and of Ahmad's own flesh,
For his perfection, majesty and beauty
Exalted above creation in his exalted station.
Are rain from clouds most generous and plentiful

Thus his perfection, his majesty, and his beauty
He surpasses all previous generous souls
Are rain that came to him from the surging, overflowing sea.
And precedence in deeds, not years, is the noble gauge

He outstripped the noble men before him through his deeds,
Hold a moment, my inspiration's replete
And precedence is in deeds, not days.
Of describing your lofty qualities and measured verse

عَنbefore وَصفكdescribing you العاليloftily وَكُلand all نِظاميmy verse
Enough! The waters of my poetic gift have run dry
You've silenced me, for your virtues abound
Before your exalted praise, and so has all my verse.
Beyond capture, overwhelming psalmody
أَفحَمتَنيyou silenced me عَنfrom عدcounting كُلevery فَضيلةvirtue

You have left me speechless, unable to count each virtue,
So imperfect and wanting, yet my poem comes to you
So I leapt beyond them with al-Nazzam's leap.

And my ode has come to you, walking in
Give her respite and hear the birds in her garden
Its bashfulness, fearing the archer's arrow.
And raise her platform above all other works
فَأَصخso listen لَهاto it وَاسمعand hear بَلابلthe nightingales رَوضهاof its garden

So lend it your ear, and hear the nightingales of its garden,
Accept that though she falls short, yet now she stands
And raise its pulpits above the peoples.
