A bough swayed in his green robes,
A bending rod amidst the greenery
and revealed the full moon's face from the darkness of his hair.
And the moon-like visage shone from the veil of hair

He charges gazelles with a mere glance
and the dominion of tawny spears has vanished before it.
And the swarthy beauty pales before him

when he journeys by night, its heat courses through my heart.
Should it spread through my being, its heat courses

Behold, people, the consequence of scheming!

By the life of that wine and whatever it contains
of white honeycomb and Egyptian sugar.
Of pure white honey and Egyptian sugar

Sweet saliva: we know for certain that its wine,
A wine whose drafts when they flow down the throat
once it enters a belly, is stronger than wine.
Are stronger than any liquor or fermented drink

His strength intoxicated for an age without sobering

Its bubbles surpass carnelian beads
and his pearly smiling mouth quenches thirst with the mother of pearls.
And it waters smiling pearls with mother-of-pearl

May God guard the easy days now past
and with me, from among its gazelles, was the palace's fawn.
In their comforts lie castles grand

I secure its environs with vigilant guards
and protect his sanctuary with keen-cutting Indian swords.
And protect its sanctuary with unsheathed swords

If I sought a rose, I'd kiss his cheek
and if I sought a clear draught, he hastened to offer his lips.
If I flung the rose's hue, he'd hurry to my lips

Never before have I seen a roe embrace a fawn
nor a mountain upon which the full moon's face appeared.
Or a mountain don the rising moon's guise

May God water the days the zephyr quenched us

With their cups of joy and glad tidings

Stars by whose light Time rose high, just as
Stars transcending the ages in splendor
through Ahmad the worth of prose and poetry rises.
As Ahmad transcends prose and verse

A scion of noble men whose hands generosity adores,
Scion of nobles who loved generosity like them
and from whose traces the desert's abandoned campsite turns green.
And from their traces bloom the barren wilds

They climbed the loftiest towering peak among glory's hills;
They rose above the plateaus of glory, loftier than high ridges
the flying eagle was humbled, unable to reach it.
Beyond the ken of soaring eagles is their ascent

And they established with their boundless charity monuments
immortal in remembrance until the world's end.
Immortalized till the end of time

He came after them, a sun appearing after stars,
After them dawned a sun amidst stars
and the sum total of the account, in tally and reckoning.
For he is peerless in counting and numbering

Despite the ages' spite, the seal of time

He is the thirsty, keen sword; when its blade is drawn,
He is the piercing sword, and if its blade is drawn
with it, on the day of battle, we shatter Time's skull.
We'll break therewith on Judgement Day the epoch's spine

He is the supple Khatti spear; if brandished in generosity,
He is the tireless worker, and if he shakes off slumber
a back-breaking blow befalls the miserly.
Misers are afflicted with back-breaking woes

He is the first rains' lightning—rather, his resolve's light,
He is the brilliant lightning, nay the light of his resolve
whose flashes have dispersed the darkness of poverty.
Dispels with its flashes the gloom of poverty

He is the sea: never have his palm's overflowing tides poured forth
He is the sea - were its floodwaters unleashed
for one who came to him without our fearing for the sea.
We'd fear for the sea from its newcomers

He is the flame in the battle of art and intellect
have you not seen the trace of embers in his pupils?
Have you not seen in his eyes the embers' vestige?

He is the firm mountain, and if the confused stumble
and noble chiefs' judgment falters in retreat and charge.
Wild game fears both knolls and lowlands

My excuse was stripped by the days that passed
