وَغَنى بِها طَير الغَرام وَغَردا
The east wind bent her figure, and it swayed;
The breeze of dawn bent her slender shape, so she swayed gently,
and love's bird sang of her and trilled.
And birds of passion sang of her, warbling sweet melodies.

فَهَزَّت لَنا رُمحاً وَسَلت مهندا
Youth's vigor stirred her and roused her,
The vigor of youth stirred her being and made her tremble,
so she brandished a spear for us and drew an Indian blade.
So she shook her spear at us and flung arrows swift as lightning.

A shy one at al-Raqmatayn gazed upon cloaks
With eyes like antelope she gazed at us coyly from afar,
that eyes had woven from longing in sleeplessness.
Her glances, drunk with passion, tempting hearts to love's surrender.

So a supple branch swayed with her, while she was hindered
She swayed a fragrant branch, evading its insistent clasp,
by a dune; she swayed in bewilderment and self-command.
Like a sand dune slipping down, confused, though standing firm.

Ah, my father be ransom for those eyes—how often they shot!
By my father! How those glances shot their shafts - till dawn
So longing's eye spent the night inflamed by them.
Left the youths' eyes bloodshot, and desire made them sleepless!

Eyes that could not bear to see us in her dwelling—
Eyes too narrow to grant us a quarter of their glance.
and that was nothing but an outright refusal.
Not miserly were they, just honoring duty's covenant.

And lips sweet as ripened dates - how we miss sipping their nectar!
and oh, how often it became a watering place for my heart!
Many's the morning they quenched the thirst of my longing heart.

Pearl teeth flashed beneath her lips, ruby-red as though tattooed,
whose carnelian, through tattooing, became chrysolite.

Like water sparkling in crystal that refreshed the soul at dawn.

A sheet of crystal, watered with its moisture
May God let our days be spent fulfilling sacred duties,
by sweet rain, became lovely and rose-tinted.
As the Companions did, both alone and congregation.

in the companions' ways, together and singly.
Till overwhelmed, we bowed down prostrate, given to devotion.

as keen in purpose as an Indian-forged sword.
Thirsting for valiant company, for only in the desert heat

for the one bound to them to depart, and for you to leave them forsaken?
I will stay in a house where circling it delights,

When asked, "Who will grant you your rightful due?" I said: "My father Ahmad -

coming to water is sweetest in heat and thirst.
The radiance of the stars is dimmed by his brilliance.

A dwelling where rights are paid in full to their owners,
The Fountain of Al-Sakaya has been their drinking place.
and people of merit are distinguished, elders and beardless youths alike.
Through Ahmad's son their glory has long shone bright.

So for him it stands secure, buttressed, tall.
and the water of the watering service was their wellspring.

Through the Messenger of God's uncle their pride rose high,
Matchless in sound judgment, holding firmly to what is right.
and through him they gained lofty glory and lordship.
The light of his intellect dispels the darkness of doubts,

Rich in benefactions whose downpour put the rain to shame,
His tables spread for newcomers, set by hands that never tire.
he revived with them the garden of bounty and brought it into being.

To you hostility is humiliated. You've fasted with reward.
