ماذاwhat عَلىupon منone who شمsmelled تُربةsoil أَحمَدAhmad
ماذا عَلى من شم تُربة أَحمَد
أَنthat لاnot يَكونbe عَنfrom المَودةaffection نائياdistant
أَن لا يَكون عَن المَودة نائيا
What harm is there for one who has smelled Ahmad’s earth
What is upon one who smells Ahmad's soil
in not being distant from affection?
Except to not distance from affection?
وَوَددتand I wished قَلباًa heart قَدalready وَهىgrew weak لفراقهbecause of parting from him
وَوَددت قَلباً قَد وَهى لفراقه
أَنthat لاnot يشمsmell مَدىthroughout الزَمانtime غَوالياprecious perfumes
أَن لا يشم مَدى الزَمان غَواليا
And I wished that a heart weakened by parting from him
I wished for a heart that weakened from parting with him
would never smell precious perfumes for all time.
That it would not perceive the length of time as painful.
صبتwere poured عليupon me مَصائبcalamities لَوif انَّهاthat they
صبت علي مَصائب لَو انَّها
وَرَدتbefell عَلىupon جبلa mountain لأَصبَحَit would have become هاوياfallen
وَرَدت عَلى جبل لأَصبَحَ هاويا
Calamities were poured upon me—had they
Misfortunes were poured upon me, if they
befallen a mountain, it would have come crashing down.
Had fallen upon a mountain, it would have collapsed.
وَمُصيبَتيand my affliction فيconcerning المُصطَفىthe Chosen One لَوif انَّهاthat it
وَمُصيبَتي في المُصطَفى لَو انَّها
صبتwas poured عَلىupon الأَيامthe days صرنَthey became لَيالياnights
صبت عَلى الأَيام صرنَ لَياليا
And my affliction over the Chosen One—had it
And my affliction is in al-Mustafa - if it
been poured upon the days, they would have become nights.
Had poured upon the days, the nights would have wailed.
