We have indeed censured, whatever appearances may suggest,
We have been blamed for what seemed good
Saʿd son of Zayd and ʿAmr of Tamim,
To Saad bin Zaid and Amr of Tamim
وضَبةُand Ḍabba المُشتريthe purchaser of العارdisgrace بناat our expense
وذاكand that عَمُّa paternal uncle بناtoward us غيرnot رحيمmerciful
And Ḍabba, who purchases disgrace at our expense;
And the shame of Al-Mushtari the buyer is on us
And that is an uncle without mercy for us.
And he is an uncle to us, not kind

قوركyour cutting بالسهمwith the arrow حافاتِthe edges of الأديمthe hide
They never cease assailing an ally of ours,
They will not cease, for long as time endures
As you cut the edges of a hide with an arrow.
To blame the Koraichite, though rightfully esteemed

وثروةand a multitude منof مُوالٍallies وصميمand trueborn kin
And we are a people who have spears,
Yet we are a tribe who bear the lance
And a multitude of allies and trueborn kin.
As a heritage from lord and vassal held supreme
لاnot نشتكيwe complain of الوصمweakness فيin الحربwar ولاnor
نئنwe groan منهاfrom it كنأنانlike the groaning of السليمthe snakebitten
We do not complain of weakness in war, nor
Nor do we shrink from blame in battle's brunt
Do we groan from it like the groaning of the snakebitten.
Nor moan o'er it like moaning of the lorn and dream
