سوى الناس مهما شاء بالناس يفعل
Has this Time, then, no diversion
Ah, has this Time any diversion
but humankind—doing with them whatever it wills?
besides people? Whatever it wills, it does to people.

ببؤسي ويغشاني بناب وكلكل
It has never ceased to be directed against me and given power,
It has never ceased to be set against me, empowered
assailing me in my misery with fang and crushing breast.
to afflict me, assailing me with fang and breast.

It found my weapon intact, and so borrowed it
And it found my weaponry intact and borrowed it
to rob me of my life—O Māl ibn Ḥanẓal.
to rob me of my life, Amal ibn Hantal.

If my appointed day has now drawn near—as I believe it has—
So if my day has drawn near—and I think it has—
like a water-bound she-camel coming one day upon no watering-place,
like a water-seeker coming one day to no watering place,

lured by the empty waste and sunlit open, and moving on
the open country and late-morning light lured her, and she advanced
toward a straight, clearly marked track like the Milky Way—
toward a level, much-traveled path like the Milky Way.

عزيزاً يُغنّي فوق غرفة موكل
Time’s agencies destroyed ʿĀd and brought low
And its workings destroyed Ad and brought low
a guarded mighty man, sung to atop an upper chamber;
a mighty man singing atop Mawkil's chamber.

A husky-voiced woman, skilled in song, sings to him
in a mellow voice or a measured melody.
with a mellow voice, or a measured song.

There at night, the bondwomen never left their cauldrons empty,
Noble men whose slave-women never empty their pots,
when the Star reached them at evening on a north wind.
when the star comes to them at evening with a north wind.

على القوم كانت فيلكون المعابل
And how many a loudly twanging, resonant bow we broke
And how many a loud, ringing bow we have broken,
against the foe, amid the clash of broad-bladed arrows.
aimed against the people, so they chew the broad arrowheads!
