فتكون أدنى للوفاء وأكرما

O neighbor of Talhah, will you return his milch-camels,

and so be nearer to keeping faith, and nobler?

تالله لو جاورتموه بذمة

حتى يفارقكم إذا ما أحرما

By God, if only you had given him pledged protection

until he left you, when he had fallen into want—

جَذلان يسر جُلّةً مكنوزة

وسماء بحونةً ووطباً مجزما

وسماء بحونةً ووطباً مجزما

joyful, sharing out a tightly packed basket of dates,

and a capacious waterskin, and a filled milk-skin.

وتذكرت حمض الجريب وماءهُ

والجزع جزع مرامر والعيلما

والجزع جزع مرامر والعيلما

And they remembered al-Jarib's salt-loving pasture and its water,

and the valley bend—the bend of Maramir—and al-Aylam, the deep well,

وجَبا نُفيع يوم أورد أهله

وجَبا نُفيع يوم أورد أهله

فكأنها ظلت نصارى صُيِّما

فكأنها ظلت نصارى صُيِّما

and Nufayʿ's pool, the day he brought his people to water;

so they seemed to spend the day like fasting Christians.

لبنُ المريرة لا يزال يشحهُ

لبنُ المريرة لا يزال يشحهُ

بالماء يمنعُ طعمه أن يشخما

بالماء يمنعُ طعمه أن يشخما

Al-Marirah's milk—he keeps diluting it

with water, preventing its flavor from growing rich.
