Ah, be well before parting, O lady of the litter.
Before parting, O my people, greetings
A greeting from one who has grown sorrowful for you.
From one made sad for you.

لِصرم حبيبٍ قد أتى أن يبينا
A greeting from one you suspected was intent
Greetings from one who thought
On forsaking a beloved now about to depart.
He was bound to the abode of a beloved who has appeared to part us.
تحيةa greeting منone who لاnot قاطعٍa cutter of حبلthe cord of واصلone who maintains ties
تحية من لا قاطعٍ حبل واصل
ولاnor صارمٍone who forsakes قبلbefore الفراقparting قريناa companion
ولا صارمٍ قبل الفراق قرينا
A greeting from one who never cuts the cord of one who keeps ties,
Greetings from one who severs no tie,
Nor forsakes a companion before parting.
And before parting, makes no companion.
فغظناهُمُso we enraged them حتىuntil أتىreached الغيظُrage منهمwithin them

قلوبا وأكباداً لهم ورئينا
So we enraged them until rage reached
We provoked them until provocation came
Their hearts and livers and lungs.
To hearts, livers, and eyes because of them.

They are the closest kin, and as numerous as the pebbles,
They are our earthly family
And our brothers through our mother and our father.
And our brothers through our mother and father.
