أقول لما أتاني هُلكُ سيدنا
لاnot يبعدcast away اللهGod ربLord الناسhumankind مسروقاMasruq
لا يبعد الله رب الناس مسروقا
I say, when news of our lord’s death reached me:
I say, when death took our master
May God, Lord of humankind, not cast Masruq away.
May God not banish the protector of people as an outcast
منone whom لاnot يشيعهaccompanies him عجزweakness ولاnor بخلstinginess
من لا يشيعه عجز ولا بخل
ولاnor يبيتremains overnight لديهwith him اللحمthe meat موشوقاcut into strips for drying
ولا يبيت لديه اللحم موشوقا
One whom neither weakness nor stinginess accompanies,
He who does not bid him farewell, it is out of inability or stinginess
Nor does meat, cut into strips, remain with him overnight.
And does not spend the night with roasting meat
مِردىa slayer حروبwars إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle الخيلthe horses ضرجهاstained them
مِردى حروب إذا ما الخيل ضرجها
نضحُthe spattering الدماءthe blood وقدand already كانتthey had been أفاريقاseparate bands
نضحُ الدماء وقد كانت أفاريقا
A slayer in war, when the horses are stained
My solace during wars when the horses stirred them up
By spattered blood, though they had been separate bands.
Blood flows as if it were Africa
والطاعنand the spear-thruster الطعنةthe thrust النجلاءwide and gaping تحسبهاyou take it to be
والطاعن الطعنة النجلاء تحسبها
شناan old waterskin هزيماsplit تمجspouts الماءthe water محزوقاtightly bound
شنا هزيما تمج الماء محزوقا
And he who deals a gaping spear-thrust, which you would take for
And the brave one who stabs forcefully
A split old waterskin, spouting water when tightly bound.
Is seen as one who flees, stirring up the water, cooked
وجفنةand a great bowl كنضيحlike a watering trough البئرthe well متأقسةpossibly brimming; unclear form
وجفنة كنضيح البئر متأقسة
ترىyou see جوانبهاits sides باللحمwith meat مفتوقاbursting open
ترى جوانبها باللحم مفتوقا
And a great bowl, like a well’s trough, [apparently brimming],
With an eyelid like the rim of a well, cracked
You see its sides bursting with meat.
Its sides seem split open with flesh
يَسّرتهاyou made it ready ليتامىfor orphans أوor لأرملةfor a widow
يَسّرتها ليتامى أو لأرملة
وكلتyou were charged بالبائسwith the wretched one المتروكforsaken محقوقاduty-bound
وكلت بالبائس المتروك محقوقا
You made it ready for orphans or a widow;
Made easy for orphans or a widow
Duty-bound, you were charged with the wretched and forsaken.
And met the need of the neglected poor, scorched
ياO لهفanguish أميmy mother إذاwhen أودىhe perished وفارقنيand left me
يا لهف أمي إذا أودى وفارقني
أودىhe perished ابنthe son سلمىSalma نقيpure العرضhonor مرموقاheld in esteem
أودى ابن سلمى نقي العرض مرموقا
O my mother’s anguish, when he perished and left me!
Oh, my mother's agony, when he passed away and left me
Salma’s son has perished, pure in honor and held in esteem.
The son of Salma, of pure honor, esteemed, passed away
