جَزاءَ مُغَلٍّ بِالأَمانَةِ كاذِبُ
May God repay Jamrah, daughter of Nawfal, on our behalf,
May God reward us well for Jamra, Ibn Nawfal’s daughter,
with the recompense of a liar who betrays a trust.
The reward due to one who keeps faith yet is called a liar,
لَهانَsurely meant little عَلَيهاto her أَمسَyesterday مَوقِفa halt راكِبٍof a rider

إِلى جانِبِ السَرَحاتِ أَخيَبَ خائِب
Yesterday, a rider’s halt surely meant little to her,
Yesterday a horseman stationed where the beasts were tethered
beside the spreading trees—the most disappointed of the disappointed.
Beside her tents was turned away, his request denied.

عَلَيَّ وَقَد أَبلَيتُها في النَوائِب
And the slanderers asked about me, so they might lie
The slanderers asked her news of me, wanting to discredit
against me, though I had stood by her in adversity.
My name; throughout adversity I proved true to her.
وَصَدَّتand she turned away كَأَنَّas though الشَمسَthe sun تَحتَbeneath قِناعِهاher veil
وَصَدَّت كَأَنَّ الشَمسَ تَحتَ قِناعِها

بَدا حاجِبٌ مِنها وَضَنَّت بِحاجب
And she turned away, as though the sun lay beneath her veil;
She turned away as though the sun itself were raiment
one eyebrow of hers appeared, while she withheld the other.
To her; from beneath her veil a brow shone like the dawn.
