لَقَدindeed أَصبَحَhave now become البيضُthe fair-skinned women الغَوانيthe beauties كَأَنَّماas though
يَرَينَthey see إِذاwhen ماan emphatic particle كُنتُI am فيهِنَّamong them أَجرَباa mangy man
Indeed, the fair-skinned beauties now seem as though
they see a mangy man whenever I am among them.
وَكُنتُand I used to be إِذاwhen لاقَيتُهُنَّI met them بِبَلدَةٍin a town
يَقُلنَthey would say عَلىdespite النِكراءِunfamiliarity أَهلاًwelcome وَمرحَباand welcome
And when I used to meet them in a town,
they would say, though they did not know me, “Welcome, and welcome!”
وَلَستُand I am not بِشَيخٍan old man قَدalready تَوَجَّهgrown old دالِفٍshuffling along
وَلَكِنand yet فَتىًa young man مِنfrom صالِحِthe worthy among القَومِthe people عقّباin descent
And I am no old man, advanced in years and shuffling along,
but a young man descended from worthy men.
