لَقَدindeed غَدَوتُI set out at dawn بِصُهبىwith Ṣuhbā وَهيَand she مُلهِبَةٌracing like a flame
إِلهابُهاher fiery rush كَضِرامِlike the blazing of النارِthe fire فيin الشيحِthe wormwood
Indeed, I set out at dawn with Ṣuhbā, racing like a flame;
her fiery rush was like fire blazing in wormwood.
جاءَتshe came لِتَسنَحُنيto cross my path as an omen يَسراًleftward فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her
عَلىtoward يَمينِكِyour right إِنّيindeed I غَيرُnot مَسنوحِsubject to a crossing-omen
She came to cross my path leftward, so I said to her:
"To your right! I am not subject to crossing-omens."
ثُمَّthen اِستَمَّرَتshe continued تُريدُshe seeks الريحthe wind مُصعِدَةًascending
نَحوَtoward الجَنوبِthe south فَعَزُّهاso her victory عَلىover الريحِthe wind
Then she pressed on, seeking the wind, ascending
toward the south, and hers was the victory over the wind.
ياO وَيلَwoe to صُهبىṢuhbā قُبَيلَjust ahead of الريحِthe wind مُهذِبَةًspeeding swiftly
بَينَbetween النِجادِthe uplands وَبَينَand between الجَزعِthe valley bend ذيpossessing الصوحِthe cliff
Ah, woe to Ṣuhbā, speeding just ahead of the wind,
between the uplands and the valley bend with its cliff.
