أَتَيناكَwe came to you لاnot مِنfrom حاجَةٍneed أَجحَفَتbore hard بِناupon us
وَلاnor أَنَّناthat we عَلَيناupon us المَطالِبُdemands
We came to you, not from need that bore hard upon us,
Nor because we were burdened with demands;
وَلَكِنbut دَعَتنيcalled me هِمَّتيmy ambition حينَwhen أَبلَغَتstrove to the utmost
إِلَيكَto you وَخالٌand a raincloud مِنof نَوالِكَyour bounty هاضِبُpouring rain
But my ambition called me, when it strove its utmost,
To you, as did a raincloud pouring forth your bounty.
