Have Daʿd’s weather-worn ruins stirred your longing—
Have Da‘d's timeworn ruins stirred your longing?
her dwellings deserted, like the hem of a mantle?
Their dwelling sites lie empty, like the border of a striped cloak.
عَلىdespite أَنَّهاthe fact that she قالَتsaid عَشِيَّةَon the evening زُرتُهاI visited her
هُبِلتmay your mother lose you! أَلَمhas ... not? يَنبُتgrow لِذاfor this man حِلمُهُhis good sense بَعديsince parting with me
Though she said, on the evening I visited her,
Yet she said, on the evening I visited her:
“May you be bereft! Has this man’s good sense not grown since parting from me?
“May your mother lose you! Has this man's good sense still not grown since we parted?
أَلَستَare you not بِشَيخٍan old man قَدalready خُطِمتَyou have been bridled بِلِحيَةٍby a beard
فَيَقصُرand so he refrains عَنfrom جَهلِthe folly of الغَرانِقَةِthe handsome youths المُردِthe beardless
Are you not an old man, already bridled by a beard,
Are you not an old man, already bridled by a beard,
and thus restrained from the folly of beardless youths?”
who should therefore refrain from the folly of handsome, beardless youths?”
وَإِنّيand indeed I كَماas قَدalready تَعلَمينَyou know لَأَتَّقيI indeed take care
تُقايَmy due caution وَأُعطيand I give تِلاديَmy inherited wealth لِلحَمدِto win praise
Yet I—as you well know—surely safeguard my piety,
And I, as you already know, do take
and give away my ancestral wealth to earn praise.
due care, and give my inherited wealth to win praise.
