She said, reproaching me in the night, “Listen!”
Foolishly, reproach besets you at night—go to sleep.
لاdo not تَعجَليhasten لِغَدٍfor tomorrow وَأَمرِand the business of غَدٍtomorrow لَهُbelongs to it
أَتَعجلينَwould you hasten الشَرَّevil ماwhat لَمnot تَمنَعيyou avert
Do not rush toward tomorrow; tomorrow’s business is its own.
Would you hasten the evil you cannot avert?
قامَتshe rose تُبَكّيlamenting أَنbecause سَبَأتُI bought لَفِتيَةٍfor young men

She rose lamenting that I had bought for some young men
a wineskin and a wine-jar, for a worn-out old camel.
لاdo not تَجزَعيgrieve أَنbecause مُنفساًsomething precious أَهلَكتُهُI have used it up
وَإِذاand when هَلَكَتI perish فَعِندَthen at ذَلِكَthat فَاِجزَعيthen grieve
Do not grieve because I have used up something precious;
when I perish, then indeed grieve.

And I was feasted at my host’s on four young she-camels,
and feasted again after a feast of four young she-camels.
أَتبكِياdo you weep?
سَفَهًfolly بكاءُthe weeping of العَينِthe eye ماso long as لَمnot تَدمَعِit sheds tears
Do you weep over every trifling thing?
It is folly for the eye to weep without shedding tears.

So when my brothers come to me, let them
find enjoyment in life, or make merry with me.
لاdo not تَطرُديهِمdrive them away عَنfrom فِراشيmy bed إِنَّهُfor indeed it is
لاthere is no بُدَّescape يَوماًone day أَنthat سَيَخلواwill lie empty مَضجَعيmy resting-place
Do not drive them from my bed, for surely
one day my resting-place must lie empty.
هَلّاwhy did you not سَأَلتِask بِعادِياءَabout ʿĀdiyāʾ وَبَيتِهِand his house
وَالخِلِّand the friend وَالخَمرِand the wine الَّتيwhich لَمnot تُمنَعِwas withheld
Why did you not ask about ʿĀdiyāʾ and his house,
and the friend, and the wine that was never withheld,

and their maiden ʿAnz, when one evening she discerned
a distant sight and sound in the open plain?

She said, “I see a man turning his sandal over
at evening, while Jaww is secure, [not] alarmed.”
فَكَأَنَّso it was as though صالِحَthe worthy among أَهلَthe people of جَوَّJaww غُدوَّةًat dawn

So it was as though the worthy folk of Jaww, at dawn,
had been served a morning draught of deadly, steeped poison.

They had been as prosperous as any I had seen, but ended up
grasping for the provisions of a well-supplied rider.

And she saw the army’s vanguard; before that,
the riding camels had danced onward with Tubbaʿ until dawn.

Yamāmah said, “Lift me onto him while he stands;
if you make him rise from kneeling with me aboard, I shall be brought low.”
