Ah, have a happy morning, O campsite, and fare well!

We greet you from afar, though you do not speak.

And sometimes I make myself forget care when it comes upon me,

On a swift, bite-scarred camel bearing the Ṣayʿariyya brand,

    Dark chestnut, firm-fleshed—or a Himyarite she-camel,

Quick-stepping, scattering pebbles with a padded hoof.

As though upon its hams were a fruitful palm’s date-cluster,

    Hanging from its spathe, uncovered.

Over it, surrendered to her, bent the Hālikī woman—

Huwaila—until she adorned it with a branding iron.
