لِيَنتَحِيَنshall surely strike مَنّيfrom me عَلىupon الوَخمِthe vile man مَيسَمُa branding iron
By my life, if enmity grows serious between us,
By my life, if enmity grows between us
A branding iron from me shall surely strike the vile man.
Some will depart from me in distress and sorrow
فَأُقسِمُso I swear أَنthat لَوِif اِلتَقَيناwe met وَأَنتُمُand you
لَكانَwould surely be لَكُمfor you يَومٌa day مِنَfrom الشَرِّevil مُظلِمُdark
So I swear that, were we and you to meet,
I swear if we were to meet while you oppose me
You would surely have a day dark with evil.
You would have a dark, grievous day
رَأَواthey saw نَعَماًcamels سوداًblack فَهَمّواso they intended بِأَخذِهِto seize it

They saw black camels and intended to seize them,
They saw the prosperity of the black sheep and greedily took it
When the ear-marked one wheeled in front of them all,
When the brave one separated from the rest of the flock
وَمِنand from دونِهِbefore him طَعنٌspear-thrusts كَأَنَّas though رَشاشَهُits spray

And before him were spear-thrusts, whose spray was like
And without him, there was a stab, as if its shower
The spouts of waterskins, while the spearheads streamed blood.
Was an isolated quiver and the tongues babbling
أَلاdo ... not? تَتَّقونَyou fear اللَهَGod ياO آلَclan of عامِرٍʿAmir
وَهَلand does? يَتَّقيfear اللَهَGod الأَبَلُّthe shameless man المُصَمِّمُthe obstinate one
Do you not fear God, O clan of ʿAmir?
Do you not fear Allah, O clan of Amer?
And does the shameless, obstinate man fear God?
Does the obstinate tyrant fear Allah?
كَماjust as اِمتَنَعَتheld out أَولادُdescendants of يَقدُمَYaqdum مِنكُمُagainst you
وَكانَand there was لَهاfor them وَلثٌa remnant مِنof العَقدِthe covenant مُحكَمُfirmly secured
Just as Yaqdum’s descendants held out against you,
Just as the children of Yaqdum refused you
And they had a remnant of the covenant, firmly secured.
And she had a secure knot on her necklace
