أَرَحَلتَdid you depart مِنfrom سَلمىSalma بِغَيرِwithout مَتاعِenjoyment
قَبلَbefore العُطاسِthe sneeze وَرُعتَهاand you startled her بِوَداعِwith farewell
Did you leave Salma with nothing to enjoy,
before the sneeze, and startle her with farewell,
مِنfrom غَيرِother than مَقلِيَةٍhated وَإِنَّand indeed حِبالَهاher bonds
لَيسَتare not بِأَرمامٍworn-out ropes وَلاnor أَقطاعِsevered strands
though she was not hated, and indeed her bonds
were neither worn-out ropes nor severed strands?
إِذwhen تَستَبيكَshe captivates you بِأَصلَتِيٍّwith a smooth cheek ناعِمٍsoft

When she captivated you with a smooth, tender cheek,
she stood unveiled to bewitch him,
وَمَهاًand crystal-white teeth يَرُفُّgleam كَأَنَّهُas though it were إِذwhen ذُقتَهُyou tasted it

and gleaming crystal-white teeth that, when you tasted them, seemed like
wine from ʿĀna, mixed with water from rock pools,
أَوor صَوبُrainfall غادِيَةٍa morning cloud أَدَرَّتهُmade it pour الصَباthe east wind
بِبَزيلِwith strained honey أَزهَرَpale and shining مُدمَجٍtightly enclosed بِسَياعِwith sealing clay
or a morning cloud's rain, made to pour by the east wind,
with pale honey, tightly enclosed and sealed with clay.
فَرَأَيتُso I saw أَنَّthat الحُكمَsound judgment مُجتَنِبُshuns الصِباyouthful passion
وَصَحَوتُand I came to my senses بَعدَafter تَشَوُّقٍyearning وَرُواعِand alarm
Then I saw that sound judgment shuns youthful passion,
and came to my senses after yearning and alarm.
فَتَسَلَّso console yourself for حاجَتَهاlonging for her إِذاwhen هِيَshe أَعرَضَتturned away

So console yourself for wanting her, when she turns away,
on a lean-bellied she-camel, free-moving in her forelegs and wide-striding:
صَكّاءَan earless ostrich ذِعلِبَةٍfleet-footed إِذاwhen اِستَدبَرتَهاyou view her from behind
حَرَجٍa wooden litter إِذاwhen اِستَقبَلَتهاyou face her هِلواعِswift and agile
an earless, fleet ostrich when you view her from behind,
a wooden litter when you face her, swift and agile.
وَكَأَنَّand as though قِنطَرَةًa bridge بِمَوضِعِat the place of كورِهاher saddle

مَلساءَsmooth بَينَbetween غَوامِضِthe recesses of الأَنساعِthe girth-straps
And it is as though a bridge stood where her saddle rests,
smooth, between the deeply sunken girth-straps.
وَإِذاand when تَعاوَرَتِalternately struck الحَصاthe pebbles أَخفافُهاher footpads

And when her footpads strike the pebbles in turn,
the scattered stones resound across the plain's surface.
وَكَأَنَّand as though غارِبَهاher withers رَباوَةُa rise مَخرَمٍa mountain pass

And her withers seem a rise at a mountain pass,
and she pulls the doubled rein taut with her sail-like neck.
وَإِذاand when أَطَفتَyou circle بِهاaround her أَطَفتَyou circle بِكَلكَلٍaround a chest

And when you circle her, you circle a chest
with quivering shoulder muscles and widely spread ribs.

Her forelegs frisk in swift travel, as though
she played ball with a player's palms in the court,

قَبلَbefore المَساءِevening تَهُمُّshe intends بِالإِسراعِto hasten
like a nimble woman racing her date-pickers
before evening, bent on hastening.
فَلَأُهدِيَنَّso I shall surely send مَعَwith الرِياحِthe winds قَصيدَةًa poem

So I shall surely send a poem with the winds,
from me, carried from place to place, to al-Qaʿqāʿ.
تَرِدُreaches المِياهَthe watering places فَماand never تَزالُceases to be غَريبَةًa stranger
فيamong القَومِthe people بَينَbetween تَمَثُّلٍquotation وَسَماعِand hearing
It visits the watering places, ever a stranger
among the people, now quoted, now heard.
وَإِذاand when المُلوكُthe kings تَدافَعَتpushed against one another أَركانُهاtheir pillars

And when the kings' pillars push against one another,
you reach a cubit above their hands.
وَإِذاand when تَهيجُstirs up الريحُthe wind مِنfrom صُرّادِهاits icy blasts

And when the wind stirs up, from its icy blasts,
snow that makes old she-camels kneel on hard ground,
أَحلَلتَyou pitched بَيتَكَyour tent بِالجَميعِamid the gathered people وَبَعضُهُمwhile some of them
مُتَفَرِّقٌscattered لِيَحُلَّto settle بِالأَوزاعِamong separate bands
you pitch your tent amid the gathered people, while some of them
scatter, to camp among separate bands.
وَلَأَنتَand surely you أَجوَدُare more generous مِنthan خَليجٍa river-channel مُفعَمٍbrimming
مُتَراكِمِpiled high الآذِيِّthe waves ذيpossessing دُفّاعِsurging currents
And surely you are more generous than a brimming river-channel,
with mounting waves and surging currents.
وَكَأَنَّand as though بُلقَthe piebald الخَيلِhorses فيalong حافاتِهِits banks

And along its banks there seem to be piebald horses,
which it hurls against the farmers' water-lifts.
وَلَأَنتَand surely you أَشجَعُare braver فيagainst الأَعاديthe enemies كُلِّهاall of them

مِنthan مُخدِرٍlair-dwelling لَيثٍa lion مُعيدِrenewing وِقاعِattacks
And surely you are braver in facing every enemy
than a lair-dwelling lion, ever renewing his attacks:

he falls upon men whose weapons are many,
so the people spend the night in uproar because of him.
أَنتَyou الوَفِيُّthe faithful one فَماand never تُذَمُّyou are blamed وَبَعضُهُمwhile some of them

You are faithful, never blamed, while some of them
have their pledges swept away by the eagle of Malāʿ.

And when his ill-wishers shoot at him, he shoots at them
with sharpened broad-headed arrows and short-headed shafts.
وَلِذاكُمُand for that reason زَعَمَتhas declared تَميمٌTamim أَنَّهُthat he

And for that Tamim has declared that he
is a man of generosity, bounty, and prowess.
