Tell Ḍubayʿah, its grown men and its children:
Convey to the old woman of Dhubay'ah and her child
And war throws men about and bites them.
That war summons men and bares its teeth
القَومُthe enemy آتُوكُمthey are coming to you بِأَرعَنَwith a vast host جَحفَلٍdensely massed

The enemy are coming against you with a vast, massed host,
The people are coming to you with a horde of warriors
Enraged—unless you maul them, you will be mauled.
Glowering, unless you confront them, you will be confronted
خَيرٌbetter مِنَthan القَومِthe men العُصاةِwho disobey أَميرَهُمtheir commander
ياO قومِmy people فَاِستَحيواso be ashamed النِساءُthe women الجُلَّسُwho stay seated
Better than the men who defy their commander
Better than the rebellious people is their leader
are the women who stay seated—O my people, be ashamed!
O people, be shy before the seated women!

I never cease to fend off a spiteful enemy from you,
Were I to cease protecting you from the attacker
who has almost spewed venom in his rage.
He would have nearly died of rage, biting his lip
أَتقَولُdo you think هُمthey مَنَعواthey denied حَنيفَةَḤanīfah حَقَّهُمtheir due

Do you think they denied Ḥanīfah their due,
Do you say they denied Hanifah his due?
after the guarantee and firm assurances—or have they forgotten?
After the pledge and oath, or did they forget?

They did not know that, fearing disgrace, he had walked
They did not know that the circumspect son of Badrah
with his sword toward death—Bayhas, son of Badrah.
With the sword, for death, is Bayhas!
