O clan of Bakr—ah, God bless your mother!
The stay has grown long, and the robe of helplessness is worn.

I have seen to my affairs; see to yours today.
And act foolishly in waging war, or act wisely.

Indeed, 'Ilaf and those on the flank of Hadan,
when they saw that it was a rule of deceit,

والظُلمُ يُنكِرُهُ القَومُ المَكاييسُ
hurriedly fitted the camels with saddles.
And discerning folk reject injustice.

They were like Samah, when Sha'af was his dwelling,
then the massive, mature camels carried him onward.

My young she-camel cried with longing there, while night lay still,
after the hush had fallen, and the bells stirred her longing.

She was hobbled, her rider awaiting sunrise,
as though longing for the sands had driven her mad.

And Suhayl had shone forth after they fell asleep,
as though it were a flame kindled in the palm.

Why do you yearn—and you are not blamed for yearning—
with smooth stone landmarks between you and your companion?

She yearned for far-off Nakhlah, and I said to her:
That is forbidden to you! Beware—those are dire calamities.

قَوماًa people نَوَدُّهُمُwe love them إِذsince قَومُناour people شُوسُhostile
قَوماً نَوَدُّهُمُ إِذ قَومُنا شُوسُ
Head toward Syria, since Iraq has no place for us,
toward people we love, since our own folk are hostile.

You shall not take al-Bawbah's paths toward Najd,
as long as 'Amr lives, and you live on, Qabus.

through them, whoever sought my ruin would have perished; I know them
to be generous-handed whenever distress grows severe.

O Harith, I am indeed of a people of ancestral honor,
who do not act rashly when weaklings lose their heads.

You swore I should never eat Iraq's grain,
while weevils eat the grain in the village.

Bosra knows nothing of the oath you swore,
nor Damascus, when the heaped sheaves are trodden out.

You taunted me, though blameless, for dwelling among you;
this is a meager share to receive from neighbors.

If I exchanged my own people for your 'Adi clan,
then I would indeed be weak in judgment and deranged.

as though it were immersed in the water's swell.

I passed beyond it on a trusty she-camel of proven strength;
she races breast-first, her head bent low.
