My heart grew lovesick after finding solace,

And readily yielded to its companion.

As though, the day they went off alone, I were drinking—

While a camel-driver urged them on through the wilderness—

Wine aged in the jar until

Its bubbles seemed like locusts’ eyes.

A curse upon her, a curse! And do not say

“Praise be hers!” whenever she is mentioned.

For love of her is either a passing fancy, or

Delight in every newly acquired treasure.

And I know with certain knowledge, not conjecture—

And fear of God is among the best provisions—

Preserving wealth is surely easier than seeking it,

And travelling through the lands without provisions.

    وَلا يَبقَى الكَثيرُ مَعَ الفَسادِ

    And careful management makes a little grow;

Nor does abundance last amid waste.
