Indeed, love for the beloved has not run out.

And despair brings solace, if only you could forget, O companion of revelry.

Long have you loved her and cherished her,

If only long devotion could avail you.

    فَإِذا نَأى بي وُدُّهُم فَليَبعُدِ

    Iraq and its people once were my heart's desire;

But if their affection has driven me far away, let it go far.

So let my she-camel leave them by night,

Leaving al-Simak behind and finding her way by al-Farqad.

She gallops when the twisted whip strikes her flank,

As a wild she-ass gallops, fearing the narrow ambush.

    Sturdy-built, when I rouse her from a kneeling-place,

    Her skinfolds ooze thickened syrup.

And when the riding camels hang back after the night march,

And mirage flows over the expanses of hard, level ground,

She bounds, and flint flies from her padded feet,

Pulling her paired companion into swift, unimpeded flight.

Toward the lands of a people whose protected guest cannot be assailed,

While another people's guest is doomed to perish.

Like Turayfa ibn al-Abd, who was their protected guest:

They struck the nape of his head with an Indian sword.

And Umama's two sons—you have seized them both,

And I reckon you will make al-Aswad the third.

    Indeed, treachery, double-dealing, and obscenity,

And betrayal—I leave them in an evildoer's town:

A king who fondles his mother and her servants,

    Loose-jointed, his penis like a kohl-stick.

At the gate he seeks out every petitioner,

But when alone, the man is not upright.

And when I settle, with Ghawa lying before my home,

Flash lightning in your own land as much as you please, and thunder.

O sons of Qilaba, it was not your custom

To accept disgrace before Mi'dad's scheme.

The stains on your ancestral honor will not be washed away

By al-Hawathir's herds when driven to Ma'bad.

So the slave is your slave: kill him to avenge your brother,

Like a wild ass that exposes its flank to the hunting spear.
