What I said stirred his eye to weeping;
What I said stirred her eyes to weep
wearied, it spent the night dozing over me.
She fell asleep on me, dazed.
فكأَنَّso it is as though حَبَّةَa grain of فُلْفُلٍpepper فيin عينِهِhis eye
ماthe span بَيْنَbetween مُصْبَحِهاits morning إلىuntil إِمْسائِهاits evening
As though a peppercorn lay in his eye,
So my words were like pepper in her eye
from morning right through to evening.
From dawn until evening.

Foolish was his remembering Khuwayla, after
Foolishly remembering her after Khuwailah
Najran's villages had barred his meeting with her.
When the lands of Najran lie between us.

And my kin settled at the dune, while hers
My family camped at al-Kathib and hers
were in Kalb's domain, on its earth and beneath its sky.
In the house of a dog, its land and sky.

O Khawl, what can you know? Many a freeborn woman,
Oh Khuwailah, a free woman wouldn't know
a tender young beauty, honored among her clan and its women,
The value of an honorable, lively woman,
قدindeed بِتُّI spent the night مالِكَهاpossessing her وشارِبَand drinking رَيَّةٍa full draught
قبلَbefore الصَّباحِdawn كَرِيمةٍcostly بِسِبائِهاin its purchase
I have spent the night possessing her and drinking a full draught
Her owner gets drunk before dawn
before dawn, costly to purchase.
With a generous woman and her youth.

And many a raiding troop, weaving like the south wind, I have witnessed,
I saw the south wind's weaving,
its foremost steeds sweeping onward in their headlong rush,
As its gusts raced ahead.

mounted on a sturdy mare that tracks flies with her gaze,
With impossible effort it chases flies
her joints fashioned to suit her long frame.
Created to soar in the sky.

Like a strip of striped silk, with stamina in reserve,
Like the noble, tall-tailed mare
she leads the steeds at dawn, the day after her encounter.
Who leads the steeds at dawn, eager to meet them.
هَلاَّwhy did you not سأَلْتِyou asked بِناabout us فَوارِسَthe horsemen of وائلٍWa'il

Why did you not ask Wa'il's horsemen about us?
Why not ask us, the horsemen of Wail,
For we are surely its swiftest to reach its enemies,
For we are the swiftest in charging the foe,
ولنحْنُand surely we أَكْثَرُهاits most numerous إذاwhen عُدَّare counted الحَصَىthe pebbles

and we are surely its most numerous when the pebbles are counted;
And the most numerous when counting warriors.
and ours are its distinctions and the glory of its banner.
To us belong its heroes and the glory of its banners.
