ياO صاحِبيَّmy two companions تَلَوَّماlinger, you two لاdo not تَعْجَلاhurry, you two
إنَّindeed الرَّحيلَdeparture رَهِينُpledged; assured أَنْthat لاnot تَعْذُلاyou two reproach
O my two companions, linger; do not hurry.
Departure is assured, provided you do not reproach me.
فَلَعَلَّso perhaps بُطْأَكُماyour delay, both of you يُفَرِّطُlets pass ahead سَيّئاًsomething evil
أَوْor يَسْبِقُoutruns الإِسْراعُhaste سَيْباًa boon مُقْبِلاapproaching
Perhaps your delay will let some evil pass ahead,
or haste may outrun an approaching boon.
ياO راكِباًrider إِماif ever عَرَضْتَyou pass by فَبَلَّغْنْthen be sure to tell
أَنَسَAnas بْنَson of سَعْدٍSa'd إنْif لَقِيتَyou meet وحَرْمَلاand Harmal
O rider, if you pass that way, be sure to tell
Anas son of Sa'd, if you meet him, and Harmal:
للّهِto God دَرُّكُماthe merit of you both ودَرُّand the merit أَبِيكُماof your father, both of you
إنْnot أَفْلَتَescapes الغُفَلِيُّal-Ghufali حتَّىuntil يُقْتَلاhe is slain
God bless you both, and your father!
Al-Ghufali shall not escape until he is slain.
منْwho مُبْلِغُwill inform الأَقْوامِthe tribes أَنَّthat مُرقَّشاًMuraqqash
أَمْسىhas become علىupon الأَصْحابِthe companions عِبئاًa burden مُثْقِلاweighing heavily
Who will tell the tribes that Muraqqash
has become a heavy burden to his companions?
ذَهَبَwent away السِّباعُthe beasts of prey بِأنْفِهِwith his nose فَتَرَكْنَهُso they left him
أَعْثىa shaggy male hyena عَلَيْهِupon him بِالجِبالِin the mountains وجَيْئَلاand a she-hyena
The beasts carried off his nose and left him
with a shaggy male hyena and a she-hyena upon him in the mountains.
وكأنَّماand as though تَرِدُcome to drink السِّباعُthe beasts of prey بِشِلْوهِat his torn remains
إذْwhen غابَwas absent جَمْعُthe host بَنيthe sons of ضُبَيْعَةَDubay'a مَنْهلاa watering place
And it is as though the beasts come to his torn remains,
with Banu Dubay'a's host absent, as to a watering place.
