    Does the obstinate heart overpower you with ardent love

    and longing for Asma, or do you overpower it?

    كذاك الهوى إمرارُه وعواقِبُهْ

    His heart is lost in love and never tires of Asma;

    such is love—its bitterness and its consequences.

    Is a man to be blamed for loving Asma, when he has drawn away

    because of the slanderers' insinuations, and turned his side away?

    And Asma is the soul's preoccupation, if you know,

    and the heart's thoughts, both manifest and hidden.

    When my soul recalls her, I remain as though

    a fever's chills and fierce grip were shaking me.
