خليليّmy two friends عوجاturn aside, you two باركَmay He bless اللّهGod فيكماyou both, with blessing
وإنand even if لمnot تَكُنْbe هندٌHind لأرضِكماtoward your land, you two قَصْداon the direct route
My two friends, turn aside—may God bless you both—
My friend, you who have strayed, may God bless you both,
even if Hind is not on the direct road to your land.
Though you did not intend India to be your land,
وقولاand say, you two لهاto her ليسit was not الضلالُlosing the way أجازَناbrought us across
ولكنّناbut we جُزناcrossed over لنلقاكمُto meet you all عَمداdeliberately
And tell her: it was not losing our way that brought us here;
Tell her we did not lose our way,
rather, we crossed over deliberately to meet you.
But we strayed in order to meet you on purpose.
تخيّرتُI selected منfrom نعمانNu‘man عودَa twig أراكةٍan arak tree
فهندٍthen Hind فمنso who هذاthis يُبلِّغهwill deliver it هِنداHind
I chose from Nu‘man a twig of an arak tree,
I chose from Numaan a branch of Arak wood,
then from Hind—who will carry this to Hind?
As a gift for India, so who will deliver it?
وأنطيتُهُand I gave it سيفيmy sword لكيماso that أقيمَهُI might straighten it
فلاso no أوداًcrookedness فيهin it استنبتُI caused to grow ولاnor خَضْداbreakage
And I applied my sword to it, to straighten it,
And I entrusted him with my sword, so he would hold it high,
so I produced no crookedness in it, nor a break.
With no bending or bowing while carrying it.
ستبلُغwill reach هنداًHind إنif سلِمْناwe come through safely قلائصٌyoung she-camels
مَهارىMahri-bred she-camels يُقطِّعْنَthey traverse الفَلاةَthe open desert بناwith us وَخْداat a swift stride
Young she-camels will reach Hind, if we come through safely,
If we survive, gifts will reach India,
Mahri-bred, striding swiftly with us across the open desert.
Carried by skilled men who cut across the deserts.
فلمّاand when أنخناwe made kneel العيسَthe pale she-camels قدalready طالhad grown long سيرُهاtheir journey

And when we made the pale camels kneel, after their long journey
But when we rested the camels, after the long journey,
to them, we found them gathered to offer us hospitality.
We found the people had gathered in the villages.
فناولتهاthen I handed her المسواكthe tooth-cleaning stick والقلبand the heart خائفafraid
وقلتand I said لهاto her ياO هندHind أهلكتِناyou have destroyed us وَجْداwith longing
Then I handed her the tooth-stick, my heart afraid,
I handed her the toothstick and my heart was afraid,
and said to her: O Hind, you have destroyed us with longing.
And said “O India you have destroyed us in passion.”
فمدَّتthen she extended يداًa hand فيin حُسنِbeauty كلٍّall تناولاًreaching to take
إليهtoward it وقالتand she said ماnot أرىI see مثلthe like of ذاthis يُهْدىis given as a gift
Then she stretched out a hand, all beauty, reaching
She stretched out a beautifully adorned hand to take it,
toward it, and said: I see nothing like this offered as a gift.
And said “I do not see any gift like this being gifted.”
وأقبلتand she came forward كالمجتازlike a passing traveler أدّىhad delivered رسالةًa message
وقامتand she rose تَجُرُّtrailing المَيْسَنانِيَّthe Maysanani garment والبُرداand the striped cloak
And she came forward like a wayfarer who had delivered a message,
She came forward like a messenger who had delivered,
and rose, trailing her Maysanani garment and striped cloak,
And stood dragging the train and veil.
تَعَرَّضُshe displays herself للحيto the clan الذينَwhom أريدهمI seek
وماand not التمستْshe sought إلاّexcept لتقتلنيto kill me عمداdeliberately
showing herself to the clansmen I sought;
She went towards the people I intended,
and she sought nothing but to kill me deliberately.
Not seeking anything but to kill me deliberately.
فماfor no شبهlikeness هندHind غيرُother than أدماءَa pale doe خاذِلٍapart from the herd
منamong الوحشِwild animals مرتاعٍfrightened تُراعيshe watches over طَلاa fawn فَرْداsolitary
For Hind resembles nothing but a pale doe that has left the herd,
She was no India, but violent raiders
a frightened wild creature, watching over a solitary fawn.
Of beasts, driving a lone camel foal.

Nor is a drop from a rain cloud, caught in a hollow
She was not a well-groomed lady carried
on a rock’s back amid smooth stone, mixed with honey,
On a sedan in a litter mixed with perfume.

any sweeter than the fragrance of a lingering sip of her saliva,
With the sweetest scent of meadow blossoms
at dawn, amid showers of dew in a dew-wet meadow.
In the morning, the slopes being watered with dew.
