    Without your nearness, the burning thirst cannot be quenched.

    And without union, the ailing one cannot recover.

    O my reproacher—it is strange in love

    that a reproacher should be called upon in calamities.

    Say to those who blame me for my love for them:

    Shorten your reproaches of me, or prolong them.

    Would that I knew what they might, now that

    love is devoted to them, say.

    And through passion have gone astray,

    over

    what I endure from you in it,

    the minds.

    فسُلُويَّ مُستحيلٌ مُستحيلُ

    Love stands firm, whatever you desire;

    so my forgetting you is impossible—impossible.

    وأرى الدارَ فتَشجيني الطلولُ

    Lightning flashes, and I weep with sorrow;

    I see the dwelling, and its ruins grieve me.

    And love's lessons—I do not deny them—

    overburden all understanding of its affairs.

    And I am content with love's decrees,

    if you wish to grow weary or turn aside.

    And whenever I seek to break away from you,

    my passion for you says to me, 'How can there be a way?'

    فدعوا الشكَّ لقد بانَ الدليلُ

    And the proof of love is clear to me;

    so abandon doubt: the proof is plain.

    And leave passion this body of mine,

    which a slender waist of yours resembles.

    For it and the campsite, whenever I address it,

    after you, are timeworn traces—both timeworn.

    How dear the trace I converse with, even though

    I do not understand what it says.

    And my sleeplessness—how dear it is in love—

    whenever the long night stretches out for me.

    The like of my passion, or the like of you—

    may we never lose you—is rare, each rare.

    And a love I was made to bear from your clan,

    since the days of youth, does not fade.

    لستُ أخشاها إذا خانَ الرسولً

    And my messenger to you is the east wind;

    I do not fear it, even when a messenger proves faithless.

    أبدَ الدهرِ وحالٌ لا يحولُ

    For you, from me, there is enduring passion

    for all time, and a state that does not change;

    بَعُدَ العهدُ وأشواقٌ تطولُ

    and a yearning that shortens time when

    our time together grows distant, and longings that lengthen;

    كلَّما سارتْ عن الربعِ الحُمولُ

    and a longing that lures me to you

    whenever the laden camels depart from the campsite;

    ليس يُنقَضنَ إذا مالَ المَلولُ

    and vows firmly bound in love,

    never broken when the fickle one turns away;

    صَحْنِ خدَّيَّ إذا حُمَّ الرحيلُ

    and tears that race one another over

    the surface of my cheeks when departure is decreed;

    and young she-camels driven onward,

    when

    the clan is far from the valley bend,

    by a swift trot.

    ليس يَبْلُغْنَ مداها والسيولُ

    The raging winds lag exhausted behind them;

    neither they nor the torrents can reach so far.

    So on the march to water they seem to rest at noon, and I have

    a firm resolve that guarantees success,

    فلها في الهامِ وقعٌ وصليلُ

    in a field where sword edges are made arbiters,

    so upon skulls they strike and clang;

    and where the air is dust, and the lances

    are splinters among which the horses stumble.

    Spear thrusts adorn their upper chests,

    just as white markings adorn their lower legs.

    And doves lamented in the ban trees of the sanctuary,

    in yearning, when Hadil had gone far from them.

    They lamented, while from the ban trees there had spread

    above al-Mahna's meadow a sheltering shade.

    They sang within it, and I revealed to them

    an anguish leaving no room for gracious patience.

    And I recalled the old days in the dwelling, though

    the dear friend had proved faithless from afar.

    So theirs in the ban trees is trilling, and mine,

    among the mute traces, lamentation and wailing.

    I compose poetry amid its ruins,

    and my streaming tears water its soil,

    in verse—would that its masters of old

    heard what I say in the choicest of my poetry.

    For its meanings, to the minds of humankind,

    are a sorcerer's breathed spell, and its wording is wine.

    An intoxication from it stirred the poets,

    at my recitation of it—one that never fades.

    From speech so delicate that I thought it

    Salsabil—or Salsabil had imitated it.

    So in every heart it brings ease,

    and from every creature it finds acceptance.
