أَغارI am jealous إِذاwhen وَصَفتُكَI describe you مِنof لِسانيmy tongue
وَمِنand of قَلَميmy pen عَلَيكَover you وَمِنand of بَنانيmy fingertips
When I describe you, I grow jealous of my tongue,
I am jealous when my tongue praises you,
and of my pen, jealous over you, and of my fingertips.
And my pen and my mind sing your virtues;
لَئِنif indeed مِنَعتُكَhave kept you away قَومَكyour people مِنfrom حَديثيmy conversation
فَكَمthen how often باتَتspent the night تُساجلكconversing with you الأَمانيwishes
Though your people have kept you from my conversation,
If your people prevent me from talking about you,
how often wishes have spent the night conversing with you!
Then my thoughts have long conversed with you in secret.
وَإِنand if حَجبوكthey veil you عَنfrom نَظريmy sight فَإِنيthen indeed I

And if they veil you from my sight, I still
And if they hide you from my sight,
see you with my mind’s eye from where I am.
I still see you with my mind’s eye from afar.
وَإِنand if تَكُis نارthe fire صَدِكَyour rejection ليof me تَلظىblazes

And though the fire of your rejection of me blazes,
And if the fire of your rejection burns me,
from you I breathe the fragrance of Paradise.
I still smell the fragrance of paradise from you.

And whether you go east or west, away from me,
Whether you turn east or west from me,
you have no dwelling but my heart.
You have no abode but my heart.

My tears watered al-Athlath in Bayrin,
The evergreen trees have drunk from the pools of my tears,
and remembrance greeted those dwelling places.
And these songs have renewed the covenant.

Haunts—how often I harvested life fresh
Covenants - how long have I suffered anguish from life
in them for a time, knowing no wrongdoer.
Yet made no covenant with my soul.

I would stroll there, proudly trailing my hem,
I wander lost, dragging my tail in confusion,
and pour wine from the palms of rejoicing.
Giving my spirit the wine of forgetfulness to drink.

Nights all enchantment, while from my fate
My nights are all an enchantment and my days
my heart grazed in safety.
Are a meadow where my love freely grazes in peace.

Then time tricked me and said, “Middle-aged!”
Time has deceived me saying I am old,
while the days of youth were still at their height.
Though the days of youth are still in their prime.

Do I acquire gray hair before forty?
I turned forty and was touched with a streak of grey;
What excuse has graying, now that it has struck me?
What excuse is greying when youth still attends me?

The hands of calamity rolled up the carpets of my revelry,
The hands of fate have stretched to fulfill my desires,
and turned my reins away from its haunts.
And loosened from their reins all my whims.

I have left nothing of pleasures except
for one like me in this life, save praising you.
Praising you through time.

For you is the pen which flows spontaneously
the keen Yemeni sword in matters of judgment.
In judgments with the staff of the right hand.

God has made it a death to enemies
and made it life for every recipient.
And the life of all people.

The eyes of the aloof doe.

In it there are only branches whose buds
whose blossoms are necklaces of pearls.
Are necklaces of pearls from perfect shells.

Its "waws" are cheeks that tell
in their lines’ blackness, the forelocks of beauties.
Of the darkness of its lines - pure pearls.

That my tongue can only in part describe you in words.
