the chamomile smiles in the gardens.
When the anemones smiled in the gardens

O God, what flashing lightning!
Oh God, from the lightning of a flashing scimitar
The clouds grew radiant from its spark.
Whose hilt gleamed from its sparks

It shone before my eyes while the night was dark,
It illuminated my sight though the night was dark
with a covering of deep gloom upon it.
With darkness draped over it like a shroud

So I spent the night as though stung by it,
I was struck as if bitten by it
as one whom a viper had given its mouth's venom to drink.
Given to drink a poison in which snakes mingled

The days of youth gave every dissolved drunk

The garments of spring thereby became ragged

Parting has indeed worn out my endurance's
Waiting has worn away my endurance
armor, which spear-thrusts cannot wear away.
With shields that no spears can pierce

And a pale camel strides the wastelands at a swift trot;
And I see the steed traversing the deserts with pride
the ostrich flies along its tracks.
While over its steps the sand grouse flutter

It tugs against me at the rein; nothing bends
It tugs at the reins and does not waver
its resolve—not a nose-peg or a nose-pin,
Whether faced by a fox or a wild donkey

nor the broad valley where riding-camels walk
Neither the commotion with which the steeds
worn down across its open ground, nor the hard uplands.
Plod heavily, nor the camel litters

I frightened the cowardly hyenas in nights
which the wolf feared to traverse,
When the howling wolf fears to cross them

when public disclosure sullied passions.
When passions are defiled by being made public

My friend and the free spirited friend
that adorns a wise man and does not disgrace him—
By whom the sensible are measured, not the vile

the wine-jars soar with joy at it.

When the night extends its corridor

And the veil is lifted from its darkness

So take the initiative, and do not be prevented
so-and-so with his advice, or so-and-so.
By so-and-so or so-and-so with their advice

So one day the cups have their share,
On a day in which cups have their fortune
holding a rein upon their drinker's head;
With a rein on the head of those who drink them

By which he is led, walking freely
at ease in mind, with no balking in him.
Easy in spirit, having no caution

And a day in which for the enemies are cups
the weakling chokes on the excess of its fury.
That choke by the evil of their bitterness

You see gushes of blood upon the full-grown horses,
You see the cleaning of the cups in the taverns
as henna dyes a full-figured woman.
As dye paints the cheeks with red stains

I yearn for the lightning in the dark nights
a gleam of radiance that lights the mountain-spurs.
And the flashing of blades by which the meadows blaze

When they gleam you would think the land
its hills dressed in their feathers by the francolin.
Was clothed by bird plumage and down

So I have a purpose when they begin to be seen
over Ḥaḍan, and longing has its own concern.
Upon a cheek, and passions have a role

My friend, look - has any habitation appeared
of ʿAlwa's to draw me, or an abode?
That might cheer me, or a place of shelter?

For the preserve's bān-trees and tamarisks, once
But the tribe and family did not appear when
her home grew distant, were no longer tamarisks and bān-trees.
Their abode disappeared, a family and home

So it is no strange thing for you two to help
It is no wonder that a stranger's love
a stranger in love surrounded by humiliation.
Would be surrounded by humiliation

For a man of passion, when
For the brother of passion, when enflamed
love's sickness lingers in him, comes to receive aid.
By the sickness of love, ends up suffering

pouring from tear-channels that never dry,
Copiously flowing, their condition unchanging

I have a heart that sees them every moment
with its own eye when direct sight is lacking.
With its gaze, if they are beyond eyesight

And I have tears that tell of my conscience
as an interpreter explains speech.
As the interpreter relates speech

So before the versifiers stand, though they band together
So apart from the composers, though they
against me, fabricate slander, and lie,
Turned against me, lied, and refused

poems—daughters of thought—coming one after another;
There are poems from the daughters of thought that flow
when they hear their marvels, they submit.
When they hear its marvels, they surrender

Their affection, offered grudgingly and under duress,
Their affection is with reluctance and coercion
while they dislike contending with me, is dissembling.
For they disliked resisting my inkwell

Their best is a blunt blade when they draw
I specifically mean the adders, wherever they crept
their dulled swords—or a blade that cannot cut.
Whether their worn out swords or their gums

When my glorious deeds have shone?

Where amidst the dried-up pastures can be seen
resolve shines forth, stands the faint-hearted coward?
Resolution, the brother of failed cowardice?

If the stars sought to rival me

Their entities would be destroyed

saffron overspreads those faces.
Those sullen faces brightened

Even if breasts were filled with resentment

So enough for them, even if they envied my eloquence
that they have submitted to my poems.
By surrendering to my poetry
