The summer haunt and spring abode stand empty of the people.

So there is no hope of comfort after them.

They departed; every joy after their parting,

and every pleasure, has followed their home into the distance.

Those are the dwellings: what harm would it do those who went far

from them by separation's decree, if they returned?

Since my loved ones' departure, I have never ceased grieving

over the dwellings—but what use is grief?

They departed, and after they left I began to lament

the cruel things the camel-driver did, and what they did.

Who will bring me the dark-lipped beloved, were she near enough to visit,

after our parting, so I could lament it while she listens—

a lament at which the solid rocks almost, in anguish,

split apart, as my heart has split from it.

Yet such is yearning: what I loathe in it [text unclear]

yields willingly toward me, while what I love holds back.

Love has various causes, and the chief among them,

from what we have observed, are the eye and infatuation.

O dwelling whose people departed, and which

long years have altered—my tears pour over it in torrents.

I weep for you in sorrow, and mourn in grief those who went far

from you that morning—whom should I mourn, and whom leave?

Were my heart still as I used to know it,

it would not sometimes turn aside and be deceived.

    يُفيقُ منها ولا بالهجرِ يَرْتَدِعُ

    O heart, neither cruelty frees you from loving them;

you do not wake from that love, nor are you checked by abandonment.

Among people, in place of one whose affection you find mere flattery,

there are better substitutes, and ample room in love.

O lightning, your fire, from my yearning and burning grief,

is kindled, flashing in the dwelling's open grounds.

As though it were my sighs, when, on the point of departure,

those laden camels rose away from al-Jarʿaʾ.

The riding camels travel by night with them, weary,

parched, loping with my loved ones or speeding onward.

When the dunes appear before them and they move clear

of them at a swift pace, sandbanks and gravelly sands come into view.

Through a wilderness in whose trackless reaches

its seasoned guide [uncertain reading], in terror, is no better than the helpless weakling.

Where, whenever you behold the hills there,

you behold them wrapped in a spreading mirage.

Our loved ones, if you have gone far from your dwellings,

and patience without you has become impossible,

do not think, when time has distanced you, that I

    from life—

    may that life never be!—

    derive any benefit.

Many a cry of “Bliss!”, “If only!”, and “Alas for me!”

for the days at al-Hima, if only they could be restored!

I weep when a songbird coos in the thicket,

while time bars me from the nearness of al-Naqa's neighbors,

with tears—whenever their clouds pour generously,

we have no fear if the rain-pools fail.

My yearning's blaze is stirred by every lightning flash

that spends the night glittering among the night-traveling clouds.

And tears are drawn from my eye whenever they call—

the plaintive, cooing birds upon their towers.

How vast is the heart, and how great its capacity,

that it should bear from them more than it can hold?

And how often is it led to those who are cruel, despite

all their unjust treatment it has suffered—and still follows!

And how long shall my endurance last after their departure

from al-ʿAqiq, and how long shall I be content with a dream-vision?

Do I not have a body that passion has laid waste?

How, then, can it bear separation or abandonment?

O poetry, I have been captivated by you, and have

spoken plainly; truth is a thing that cannot be dismissed.

Without you, lovers would not have known their way

within it, nor laid down in love what they laid down.

Nor do I say what I have said in vain:

where is well-wrought verse, and those who excelled in its casting?

And where among the masters of this art is one

before whose arena adversaries and factions have halted?

This is verse: when the reciters utter it

and it takes wing, it alights upon love's secret.

And front-runners among poetry's thoroughbreds have left

the spirited, fleet-footed steeds unable to catch them.
