حتامَuntil when يُهدونَthey bestow اليناto us القَلقَاanxiety
Tell the neighbors of al-‘Aqīq and al-Naqā:
Tell the neighbors of agate and crystal
How long will they keep bestowing anxiety upon us?
They must send us worry beads

O dwellers of my heart, may a harbinger
Tell me when the meeting will be.

My living on after—after my separation from you has no
What is the meaning of my staying after being away from you
Meaning; but if I meet you, life becomes sweet.
If I met you, staying became good

Time has made me wretched; but if it makes me happy
Time has saddened me, so if it made me happy
By reuniting me with you, misery will vanish.
By reuniting me with you, sorrow disappeared

بجمعِby joining ماwhat بينَis between الغرامِpassion والتقىand piety
I love you and purify myself—though rarely—
I love you, I wish, and it is rare
By bringing passion and piety together.
To combine between passion and chastity

Love for you is a ship I have boarded,
Your love is a ship I rode
Safe—so how could I fear drowning?
Safe, so why would I fear drowning

Far be it for one who greets the morning hoping for union
Woe to him who hopes for reunion in the morning
To enter the evening burning in the fire of your abandonment.
And finds himself at night burned by your separation
