Tears are spilled upon the open grounds of spring,
Tears spilled on the meadows of spring
and a lovesick one's heart is hidden in the caravan.
While the one whose heart is infatuated is veiled in the caravan

مقالُه مَلَقاًذا البعدُ تعذيبُ
I bade it farewell when you departed; I was made to laugh
I bid him farewell when you built and he made me laugh
by its flattering words: 'This separation is torment.'
His words were gentle, though separation is torment

Our beloveds, you left me, and with you went
Our loved ones turned away from me and accompanied you
my heart—there it is, led alongside the departing litters.
My heart, there it is, distraught in anguish

The fires of remembering you almost burn me,
The fires of remembering you nearly burn me
and the dove sings melodiously among the branches.
While the dove coos blissfully on the branches

As though remembrance of you were reserved for me alone, I have
It's as if remembering you paused over me
tears drawn forth by the ropes of this separation.
Tears summoned by the sorrows of this separation

I have become Ash'ab in preferring union with you,
I spent my evenings preferring your company
and the one among you promising union is 'Urqub.
While the tryst with you is difficult

O gazelle of Rama, a longing within me is stirred
O Raima, longing stirs in me
by memories of your past—and kindness is duly reckoned.
Memories of your past kindness ever counted

After your departure, is there anything left to frighten me?
Is there anything after your distance that preoccupies me
This, though your love was reckoned with before today.
When love for you before today was counted

I used to fear it though reasonable minds
shows you through imagining something still concealed.
Show you illusion and remain veiled

Where are the gazelles whose meadows
delighted me with his solicitude and welcome?
Pleased me with their shelter and welcome

They departed, and he departed; since their parting I have
They are gone and after them remains
a tooth that keeps sending back my fingertips stained,
An age that brings my youth back faded

from longing—yet there is no Joseph at every waystation;
Yearning, and no Joseph in any stage
no, nor is there a Jacob in every house.
No, and no household among them like Jacob's

I weep, and hopes delude me about my endurance,
I cry and hopes make me forget my patience
offering patience—though I know my patience is vanquished.
My pact with patience overcome

A delusion of fancy—without it, they would never have won
Deceptive thoughts, without them
their desires from us, those eyes and brows.
Eyes would not reach their hopes and brows

O Har, what ails me, and why does the lightning trouble me?
O hot thunder, why do you disturb me
As though it were kindled by the blaze of estrangement.
As if ignited by the fires of separation

The water of its raincloud never gushes down
Its pouring water did not care to flow turbid
without returning mingled with my tears.
Except to curl with my tears and be severed

In that cloud, lightning has a smile that never leaves it,
Lightning has within it a smile it does not dismiss
and I, after parting, have a frown in the dwelling.
While I have after the companionship only frowning in the house

I see the dwellings; they stir my yearning, yet I do not recognize them,
I see the homes, so I pour out and deny them
until their fragrance awakens my recognition of them.
Until their familiarity reminds me of the good times

كنّا وأرواحُها البيضُ الرعابيبُ
Encampments that were bodies in the days when there
They were dwellings, a time we dwelled in them
we lived, their souls the fair, delicate beauties.
And their souls the chaste white gazelles

Today time's vicissitudes have changed them, and in
Today the days have changed them and in
the turns of fate there are marvels for the beholder.
The turns of fate wonders for the beholder

And union, if grudging time permits it,
Reunion is if time permits it from its stinginess
is a gift from one of fortune's rare lapses.
Of the whims of fortune conferred

I want reunion while beyond me and them
lie deserts that weary even mature, unruly camels.
Is a hand which destiny's calamities are entrusted

Each day my noble camels, gaunt as they are,
Every day arrows torment me as they
travel east and west toward the beloveds.
Aim towards the loved ones, rising and setting

Their hoof-pads erase a line and inscribe it
Erasing our marks, a line, and recording it
toward the dwellings—now erased, now written.
Towards the homes - erased and recorded

They traveled without complaining of fatigue in the wilderness;
They marched not doubting in the sands any deception
how could they, when their shinbones had been struck?
How so when the lyres there are strummed

They rend the cloaks of a night they do not find strange,
The nights' robes that we do not deny above us
bearing us, with nothing above them but cloaks.
Are none but the robes of night

In a wasteland like the edge of an unsheathed sword,
In a startling event like the slashes of swords
I cross it on my mounts, though it is dreaded.

From the camel-drivers and my verse, for them and for us,
Of the warriors and from my poetry for them and us
come chants to soothe them late at night, and songs of love.
A limit validating weakness and youth

May a downpour from the clouds water the dwellings; and if
The rain clouds watered the dwellings, so if
the clouds withhold, then from my tears come downpours.
The clouds are stingy, from my tears come showers

My tears pour as I recite a poem made tender by longing
It obsesses me and I recite poetry softened by infatuation
in its love prelude—a poem of noble lineage among poems.
Its style in poetry attributed

رأيتَهُ وهو دونَ الكلِّ مخطوبُ
A poem that, whenever poetry's suitor divorces other poems,
Poetry, when its composer woos poetry
you see, alone of them all, still sought in marriage.
You see it preferred over all and betrothed
