اِذاif شئتمُyou wish مِنfrom دونِother than أهلِthe people of الورىthe world نفعيmy benefit
Repeat to my ears the tale of those departing,
They repeat the talk of those who accuse me, though it hurts my ears,
if you wish to benefit me rather than anyone else in the world.
If you wish, without the people of the land, seeking my benefit,
واِلاّand otherwise فخلُّونيthen leave me وماand whatever شاءَwilled هُit الهوىpassion
فماfor not ضاقَfailed يوماًever عنin معاناتِهenduring it ذَرْعيmy endurance
Otherwise, leave me to whatever passion wills;
Otherwise leave me be, to follow where desire leads,
for my endurance has never failed to bear it.
Never has the expanse of a day been too narrow for my troubles,
وخلُّواand let المطيَّthe riding camels الهوجَthe headlong ones تبتدرُrace toward الفلاthe desert wastes
فاِنْso if ظمئتْgrew thirsty فيهاin them المطاياthe riding camels فهاthen here is دمعيmy tears
And let the headlong riding camels race across the wastes;
Leave the raging camel without saddle or reins,
if the camels thirst there, here are my tears.
If the camels are thirsty, here are my tears,
مدامعtears قدalready أضحتhave become علىupon كلevery حادثcalamity

Tears that have come to be, for every calamity,
Tears that now flow for every misfortune,
apportioned even to the pale camels and the campsite.
Scattered even for the trackers and guides,
واِنْand if لمعَflashed البرقُthe lightning الحِجازيُّof the Hijaz شاقنيstirred my longing

And if the Hijazi lightning flashes, I am stirred to longing
When the Hejaz lightning flashed, testing me,
by its gleam between Khabt and Jamʿ.
Its brilliance between layers and piles,
تألَّقَflashed خفّاقَfluttering الوميضِthe gleam كانَّهas though it were

It flashed with a fluttering gleam, as though it were
It shone with the fluttering of lightning, as if
my heart, when the loved ones had departed from Salʿ.
It were my heart, now my loved ones have departed,

Its flash fanned longing's fierce blaze and sent streaming
It stirred and ignited the burning embers of longing, its gleam
my tears, stoking the searing pain between my ribs.
Made my tears flow, and the pain within my breast,
فللّهِso, how wondrous, by God! ايماضُthe flashing of البروقِthe lightning flashes كأنَّهاas though they were

How wondrous, by God, the lightning flashes, like
By God, the lightning is like pure-bred steeds
keen blades drawn beneath a night of dust.
Galloping under a night full of stars,
ومشمّاand among what [uncertain reading] شجانيgrieved me فيin الظلامِthe darkness ابنُa child of دوحةٍa great tree

And among what [uncertain reading] grieved me in the dark was a great tree's child,
And I heard a heart-stricken songbird in the darkness,
singing longingly from the bān trees, on a branch.
Singing of love for the girls above a branch,
فهمتُso I was enraptured بتسجيعِby the rhythmic cooing of الحمامةِthe dove سُحرةًbefore dawn

So I was enraptured by the dove's rhythmic cooing before dawn;
I understood from the cooing of the dove a magic,
and everyone possessed of longing yearns for cooing.
And I yearn for every love and passion,
وأحسستُand I felt مِنfrom ذاكَthat التغرُّدِbirdsong فيin الحشاthe inward parts

And from that birdsong I felt within my breast,
From that warbling in the thickets I sensed,
at the memory of the protected pasture, a sting sharper than any sting.
From the memory of love, a sting sharper than a sting,
فمَنْso who ليfor me بهwith it والعيسُwhile the pale camels فيin الآلِthe mirage ترتميhurl themselves

Who, then, will bring me to it, while the pale camels plunge through the mirage,
Who can take me to him, while the trackers in the family
bearing us toward it, from hollow to height?
Stumble towards him, between decline and ascent,

And those sunken-eyed riding camels, amid its surging depths,
Those slender she-camels in their dense darkness,
all lean, each amid the shimmering mirages like a girth-strap,
Each burdened with sadness like a bite,

head with us for al-ʿUdhayb's water and its people,
They lead us to the spring of Udhayb and its people,
when the longing they obey keeps them from the valley bend.
When longing afflicts them, beyond panic and alarm,
فياso, O حارِḤār هلdid عاينتَyou behold ناراًa fire علىon الحمىthe protected pasture
بدتْappeared لكَto you وهناًlate at night أمor رأيتَyou saw سناthe radiance of لمعِa flash
O Ḥār, did you behold a fire on the protected pasture
So tell me, oh heart, have you seen over love’s embers
that appeared to you late at night, or did you see a flash's glow?
A fire that seemed to you dim, or a glittering tooth?
وهلand did نفحتْwafted عنfrom منحنىthe bend of البانِthe bān trees نفحةٌa fragrant breath

And did a fragrant breath waft from the bān trees' bend,
Has a scent blown from the curving tresses of a beauty,
so that you gained the trace of Lamyāʾ's perfume within it?
Where you have gleaned from it a deterrent for desire?
فعينايَso my two eyes فيin شُغْلٍpreoccupation بفائضِwith the overflow of دمعِهاtheir tears

My two eyes are occupied with their overflowing tears,
While my eyes are busy with the excess of their tears,
and have scattered them singly and in pairs.
Which they have scattered, in singles and pairs,
ومِنand among عجبٍwonders أنَّيthat I اُريدُseek عليهماagainst them both

And it is a wonder that I seek, against them both,
And how strange that I wish to curb them,
a helper—and who will aid me against my eye and tears? [conjectural reading]
When my love is beyond reach, beyond eye and tear,
ومَنْand who ذاis there الذيwho مِنfrom بعدِafter جيرانِthe neighbors of حاجرٍḤājir

And who is it, after the neighbors of Ḥājir have gone,
Who, after the neighbor Departs, tries to bar me,
who would try to turn me aside, or think of holding me back?
Or avail me with succor against my enemies?
وغيرُand not عجيبٍstrange أنthat جَزِعتْI was distraught وقدand already سرتْjourneyed by night

حمولُهمُtheir laden camels تأتمُّhead for نجداًNajd ولاand not بِدْعِunprecedented
Nor is it strange that I was distraught when they journeyed by night—
Nor is it strange that they panic, when their caravan departs,
their laden camels, bound for Najd—nor is it unprecedented.
Traveling Najd, heedless of my call,
بلاداًa land بهاin it جادَlavished الزمانُtime بقربِهمْwith their nearness
عليَّupon me ولمand did not يجنحْincline إلىtoward البُخْلِstinginess والمَنْعِand withholding
A land where time lavished their nearness
To lands where time was generous to be near them,
upon me, without inclining toward stinginess or withholding.
Not inclining to stinginess or prevention,
لئنif indeed سارَdeparted مَنْthe one whom أهوىI love وسارتْand traveled برحلهِwith his saddle

If the one I love departs, and with his saddle travels
If he I love travels, and his camel litter departs,
a stout-backed she-camel, swiftly swinging her forelegs,
Laden with provisions, should union’s rope fray,
لارتحلنَّI shall surely saddle العيسَthe pale camels بُدْناًstout توامِكاًhigh-humped
اِذاif كانwas شملُthe bond of الوصلِunion آلَcame إلىto صَدْعِa rupture
I shall surely saddle the pale camels, stout and high-humped,
I will wander ceaselessly should kinship break,
if the bond of union has come to rupture.
After the talk of those who accuse, to reunion,
وأتركُنهاand I shall surely leave them وهيwhile they are التوامكُthe high-humped ones سُهَّماًgaunt
تروحُtravel at evening علىwith أينٍweariness وتغدوand travel at dawn علىwith ظَلْعِa limp
And leave them—those high-humped camels—gaunt,
And I will recite poems whose proofs have matured,
traveling at evening weary, and at dawn limping,
As I wish, excellent in thought and nature,
الىuntil أنthat يعودَreturns الشملُthe company بعدَafter انصداعِهits sundering
وبعدَand after فراقِparting from الظاعنينَthe departing travelers إلىto جَمْعِreunion
until the company returns, after its sundering
In every cunning mind are compromising verses,
and after parting from the travelers, to reunion.
And those who admire what is a kind of fraud,
وأُنشِدُand I recite أشعاراًpoems براهنَّfashioned them فاغتدتْso they became
كماas أشتهيهِI desire it جودةُexcellence of الفكرِthought والطبعِand natural talent
And I recite poems, fashioned until they became
Necklaces of poetry I string, whose pearls
as I desire, through excellence of thought and native gift.
When people string insipid words,
قريضاًverse لهit has فيin كلَّevery عقلٍmind خديعةٌa beguilement
ومُعجِبُهand its marvel ماnot كانwas ضرباًa kind مِنَof الخضدْعِfalsehood
Verse with a beguiling charm for every mind,
Well-arranged compositions whose words, though raw,
and its marvel is no kind of falsehood.
Are exempt from what stains and offends,
قلائدُnecklaces of أشعارٍpoems أُنضَّدُI string دُرَّهاtheir pearls
اِذاwhen نضَّدَstrung الأقوامُother people شِعراًverse مِنَof الوَدْعِcowrie shells
Necklaces of verse whose pearls I string,
Men say, hearing its eloquence,
when others string verse of cowrie shells.
By your life, this is beyond ability and means,
نظيمٌa string of verse غدتْbecame ألفاظُهits words وهيwhile they are نُصَّعٌgleaming white
مُبرأةٌfree مماfrom what يَشينُdisfigures مِنَof القَرْعِharsh clashing
A string of verse whose words, gleaming white, have become
It has an impact on people's souls when it becomes
free of the jarring harshness that mars them.
The rhymed prose of people, though weak in impact,
يقولُsay رجالٌmen يسمعونَhear بديعَهُits wondrous art
لعمرُكَby your life! ماnot فيwithin الطوقِpower هذاthis ولاnor الوَسْعِcapacity
Men who hear its wondrous art say,
Until unity returns after its fracture,
By your life, this is beyond our power and capacity!
And after the distance of those who accuse, to union,
لهاthey have فيin نفوسِthe souls of الناسِpeople وقعٌan impact إذاwhen غداbecame

قريضُthe verse of أناسٍother people وهوwhile it is مُسْتَضْعَفُdeemed feeble الوَقْعِin impact
They leave a mark on people's souls, while
I will recite poetry whose proofs have ripened,
others' verse is deemed feeble in its effect.
As I wish, excellent in thought and nature.
