Love lies buried within the curving ribs,
A passion hidden deep within my ribs
And a secret is guarded despite the remoteness of the meeting place.
A secret guarded at the shrine preserved

And an eye upon the ruins, the stream of whose tears
An eye shedding tears on the ruins
Helps and sustains me on the day of separation.
Helping me on days of grief and loss

I yearn with the yearning of mother-camels at evening,
I yearn with longing like the doe at dusk
And the dwellers have departed from those abodes,
When from those lands all warmth has swerved

A yearning as passion wills; and neither love
With a longing as love itself desired
Nor longing is anything but anguish and moaning.
Nothing but grief and moaning were deserved

So, O heart, how long? Your sickness in love has no
Oh heart, is there no cure for your sickness in love?
Cure; madness born of it has indeed become your foe.
It has made you truly mad in turn

Does passion's stirring within you, whenever
Don't you still, whenever longing is renewed
The time since the travelers left grows long, find no repose?
Find tranquility when the slanderers adjourn?

Nor is there for separation anything but freely shed tears;
My consolation in grief is only tears
Their downpouring clouds are eyelids.
Pouring like rain from swollen eyes downturned

And who is there, after the neighbors of Ḍārij,
After my neighbors turned hostile, who now
Who can lessen a love I do not see diminishing?
Can gently love me, as I see love spurned?
واِنّيand I indeed وانand even if جادواthey gave freely بمثليwith one like me علىto الهوىlove

And I, though they freely gave up one like me to love,
Though they reject a lover like myself
Am loath to part with their like for as long as time endures.
Eras of time for them are eras unlearned

One who sorrows for an absent love, whenever
Wastes and rugged uplands stretch far between him and them—
Remote hills loom, feels depressed, forlorn

Those I loved are now far removed from me

All I wished for before we were parted, no more

O beloveds of my heart, now that your companionship has departed
My beloved ones, now that your company is seen
And you have left al-Jar‘ā’, how am I to be?
As forbidden to the lovesick, how can I go on?

Passion has decreed for me that I remain sleepless
Sorrow has ordained that when night falls
When eyes sleep beneath the darkness.
I lie down restlessly, with eyes that burn

And that nothing guides those visiting me to my bed
And only sighing and moaning accompany
But a sigh and a moan from my sickness.
My troubled sleep and fevered return

I spend the night in secret converse with thought, never tasting sleep,
I refuse to tell my thoughts, fearing betrayal
Wary and afraid that a companion might betray me.
Lest my confidante one day act untrue

And I grow restless at the memory of a life I had grown used to,
I am restless remembering a life now lost
As is the nature of one who never knew how to betray.
For I know not how a trusted friend can disown

Worthy of keeping the pledge, in closeness and separation,
I who honor pledges of love and loyalty
And one like me is fit and worthy of fidelity.
Am worthy of faithfulness, ever known

And if lightning flashes for me over Ḥājir's soft plain,
Though a flash of lightning illuminates the night
My tear ducts flow with streaming tears.
My streaming tears flow down my cheeks stung

And a bird calling in the bān tree, sorrowful like me,
A dove laments from the branch of an arar tree
Laments, so my anguish appears and becomes plain.
Her weeping reveals my pain among men

When it sings from above the branch of an arāk tree,
When the clouds deny their rain, my sorrow
Tears flow down, pouring incessantly, never drying.
Helps feed my passion in the morn's clear sun

Abundant, though the clouds have been stingy with their water,
The branches call doves at dusk, but what heart
Aiding my passion this morning, flowing like springwater.
Failed to yearn when called by the boughs?

Doves pass the evening as branches stir their longing;
Had my loved ones kept their vows and not strayed
And what heart have branches not captivated?
Restless vigilance would not have plagued this wounded heart

Had they been just and granted me my youth
My companion—this familiar sleeplessness.
Never would I have refused, always yours

And had they treated me fairly in love, I would not spend the night
O beloved ones, you promised to return
With my heart a hostage in passion's captivity.
Betrayal wounds, while promises are open sores

O our beloveds, I have promises of your return;
When I return, I shall complain of your abandonment
So how long will they be deferred, when promises are debts?
My lament will teach even rock to bend

And how long must I complain of your estrangement with a lament
When I say this absence is prolonged, hope
That teaches the breast of stone how to soften?
Gallops my steed faster than any dune

Whenever I say, 'This is the end of distance,' you are flung
But when you are far, my stratagems collapse
Away by a far-reaching separation that exhausts the riding camels.
Separation is certain, reunion a boon

So what is my recourse? Your return has passed into doubt;
In your presence or your absence alike
And as for separation and estrangement, they are certain.
You dwell just below my breastbone, deep within
وفيand in حالتيهجرانكمْboth states: your estrangement ووصالكمْand your closeness

And in both states—your estrangement and your closeness—
I swear by you I cannot forget what we promised
Your place is secure beneath the heart's membrane.

I swear by you: I have not changed from what you knew of me,
I am transfixed by passion whenever the doves
Nor has my oath of faithfulness ever proved false.
Begin their song in the branches, once again

How can one who loves consider breaking trust?
Doves sing in their nesting places.

And how could a love-sick man countenance breaking covenants,
Two who are lovesick weep when conversation
For whom love is sacred law and longing a religion?
Turns to intimacy — all words turn into pain

And two lovers wasted by passion weep whenever
They sympathize with the naïve antelope, while around it
Talk of closeness arises—and talk has many branches.

They both dote on the innocent gazelle, while around him
One is wounded by the glances of the beloved's eyes
Stand lions whose lair is made of dusky spears.
Another by her swaying gait, her shape so fine
فهذاso this one جريحٌwounded منby سيوفِthe swords of لحاظِهhis glances

So this one is wounded by the swords of his glances,
And that one is pierced by his supple, swaying form.
