Lo, greet the traces of the fading encampments.

May showers of early rains water them,

and may every downpour rain generously upon their ruins,

from rainclouds, gushing in torrents, pouring down.

Homes of loved ones, and a kneeling-place for she-camels,

and a gathering-place of close friends, and a seat for evening company.

I halted there the hardy she-camels, lean

from swift striding and rapid trotting, narrow-eyed.

Upon them rode men of longing who, whenever parting was mentioned,

let streams of tears flow between their eye sockets.

As though the noble-bred riding camels had promised them

a swift reunion—or the camels' backs had.

So one seeks his heart among the dwellings,

and another complains there of the wild-ox calves' aversion.

Whenever the company shared cups of their love

while riding them, they watered them with tears that sprang forth.

The hardship of journeying wasted them and made them

like slender staffs, so lean within their girth-straps.

Exhausted, worn out by trotting, kneeling

from fatigue, they scraped the pebbles with their chest-pads.

A feast on the desert's platters—their flesh became

meat for the predatory eagles of the rocky heights.

By God, how many of them lie spent and abandoned in the vast waste,

seized by the gaping mouths of death!

O my two companions, turn aside today, that we may

renew the hours of meeting at Hajir.

For there are gentle, unveiled gazelles there

who put the skittish white gazelles to shame.

And do not reproach me for watching the lightning over its land,

out of longing for those fresh, radiant cheeks.

When a breath of the east wind wafted from its meadow,

we inhaled the fragrance of its scented gusts through our nostrils.

Its skirts are trailed over the gardens,

and it leaves in them the breaths of a merchant's musk-pod.

Ah, by nights of union now gone,

whose beginnings were not frightened by their endings—

nights when I did not, out of longing, charge my gaze

with watching the bright, radiant stars.

After their departure, in longing's wake, I have become

a captive to the memory of bygone nights

and days of delight; whenever their memory arises,

I feel its scorching noonday heat within my heart.

O its bygone days on Hajir's soft sands,

may recurring showers of my streaming tears water you.

Tears that, whenever the rain ceases, pour down

from their clouds like scattered pearls.

O dwelling of loved ones, may you be spared my being found

forgetful of your days—may life-giving rain drench you.

I swore by disheveled riders in their saddles, as though

    on each of their camel-saddles rested the shadow of a bird;

and by pale camels, bowlike, pressing onward,

    racing the breaths of the rushing winds;

and by sleek horses like she-ghouls—and how fine is

the coupling of seasoned steeds with interlocking spears!

and by the stand of a broad-armed, intrepid warrior,

bold in fighting the armored champions who kindle war,

that I, though poetry is an inborn gift

to poets besides me, desert and city dwellers alike,

will surely silence their masters of eloquence

with verse that renders poetry unbreakably strong.

And people are just like seas: some of them

are barren, while others are mines of jewels.
