    لاحتْ ربوعُ هندِ

    Let the riding camels stride swiftly;

    Hind's dwelling places have appeared.

from the tender tips of the laurel.

    So they sped along,

    seeking the land of Najd,

    until it seemed they harbored

the same burning longing as I.

    My passion passed on love of her;

    indeed, passion is contagious.

    Noble she-camels, they mock

the swift stride of dusky ostriches.

They are content in their drinking

with any scant pool of water.

    Our beloved ones, you broke

those pledges after I was gone.

And I never thought that you

would forget the claim of my affection.

    You squandered it heedlessly,

after separation, as you did my pledge.

I was made to bear love's burden,

    alone, apart from my companions.

And I have not changed from what you knew

    of my long-standing ardor.

    You departed, and tears became,

    after separation, my daily draught.

Scattered, they pour down as when

    a necklace's string is severed.

    Till it had indeed furrowed—

    the pouring of tears—my cheek.

You tormented one who would not countenance

    tormenting you through separation.

    I accept whatever pleases you,

    except separation and rejection.

And a reproacher laid bare to me

    his grudges and rancor.

You see him, now in love with

the beloved ones, yet opposed to me.

May I be spared his becoming

my equal, or turning into my peer.

What have I to do with parting, which turns aside

    my purpose in the end?

It renewed the flood of my tears,

at their distance, as of old.

    No rain cloud driven toward

    the preserve's meadows amid thunder,

with lightning flashing within it at night

    like an Indian sword,

    driven by the east wind

in a blackened bank of cloud,

    unloosing its rain-spouts over

    the preserve's hills and hollows,

is more copious than my tears, now that

    Da'd's encampment has been struck.

O moringa of the sandy tract, from

    that solitary dune,

and O little tamarisks of the winding sands,

is this calling of any use?

    of a deadly passion?

    I lost, since the parting

and departure of my companions, my reason.

I was content that they should soothe

the one they forsook with a promise.

    O neighbors who journeyed away,

whose flock is surrounded by lions,

lions of the thicket, whose garb

is a close-linked weave of iron.

    They guarded them with spears,

    straightened and supple,

    as did every dauntless lion

    on a lean-bellied, mighty steed,

    his peers following him

    on sleek-coated steeds,

    ranging from elders upon

    their backs to beardless youths.

Were it not for you, I would have met them

    with my resolve and earnestness,

    bared, like a sword

    drawn gleaming from its sheath,

    keen in point and edge,

and in striking blade and watered steel.
