ولعينهِ بعدَ النوى أن تَدْمَعا
It is only right for the longing lover to ache,
It is right for the longing one to be in anguish
and for his eye to weep after separation.
And for his eyes after sleep to shed tears

The loved ones left the playfields of Laʿlaʿ,
The loved ones left the playgrounds of Lal'la
so after them I abandoned Laʿlaʿ.
So I deserted Lal'la after the loved ones

They set; I saw no rising of the crescent moons after
They departed, so I did not see any new moon after they left
they had set, nor any dawning of my eye's delight.
Nor any joy for my eye rising

A home is made by loved ones; may the rain not water
The abode with loved ones is not watered, nor does it pasture
the loved ones' dwelling after them, nor nurture it.
The abode of loved ones after them, nor does it nurture

What have I to do with ruins, lamenting what has vanished
What is it to me to mourn what has vanished
of them, recalling a playfield or a spring encampment?
Of it, and I remember a playground or an enclosure

I used to beg my tears when the rain was stingy
from my tears, when rain grew stingy and ceased.
To stop, then pour forth generously

in the days when it was a haunt for budding-breasted maidens,
Days when the gazelles were intimate with it
glorying in them, a pasture for wild-cow calves.
Taking delight in them, and for the wild cows, a pasture

O dwelling whose people time has toyed with,
O dwelling where time played with its people
and which time's turns made a barren, desolate waste,
And events returned it to desolation and abandonment

I did not begrudge shedding my tears there
in torrents when the streaming rain clouds dispersed.
Profusely when the clouds were in fine drizzle

But they are exhausted, and their water depleted
my fear that love's union might be torn apart.
Fearing for the unity of love that it will split

when the branch donned spring's blossoms and flourished.
When the blossoms of spring were adorned and flourished

She moaned atop the highest branches, unable to endure
branches urged her to coo.
The branches bearing her, urging her to moan

She called the male dove; he spent the night in bliss
She called to the softly blowing morning breeze and it stayed
at his nearness to her, while I spent mine distraught.
Charmed by her nearness, while I stayed fearful

I likened her to my tears in lament, except
lamented for joy, while I lamented in grief.
She moaned while I moaned agitated and anguished

from them the companions had gone, tents struck and farewells said.
The beloved band had withdrawn, bidden farewell

when the company withdrew from me, resolved to depart.
When the companions went far and intended departure

Their trot upon the sands and gravel

at midday, that it held a drinking place.

Seeking, when the herds bellow their call
alas for them, a watering place in its shimmer.
Alas for them from what casts its shadows, a ruin

I let the wails in distress subside?
