I lay sleepless from love, while night let fall its tresses,

and my longing charged me with watching the stars.

The eyes of the sleepers slumbered, but I did not sleep,

from passion and longing in night's deepest darkness.

God help me with a heart that hopes beguile,

so it yearns for the promise of deceitful wishes,

and with the trace of a dwelling whose grounds have changed,

unwillingly, from evening companions to cawing crows,

and with an eye whose eyelid knows no closing,

when riders sleep upon their fine-bred camels.

Whenever lightning flashes or a bird sings,

remembrance surrounds me on every side.

As though longing were decreed upon me, and had always been

an inescapable burden upon me throughout all time.

Must I remain each day charged

with questioning effaced traces and places of play?

Time's vicissitudes have ravaged them, and they have become

pastures for the east wind's breezes and the south winds.

And if lightning from the Hijaz flashes, I am stirred to longing by

its brilliance above the hills and plateaus.

Its flash gleams and fades, as though it were

the gleam of front teeth from beloved women's lips.

My longing compels me to ride my aspirations,

and never ceases to carry me onto difficult mounts.

I have seen nothing sharper than eyelids whose arrows

are shot at me from the bows of eyebrows.

They have indeed denied the lids of my eyes their sleep,

so sleep will not return to them as long as I live.

And I did not know, while separation lay quiet,

that death lay in my departure with the caravans,

nor that the moons of secluded chambers could be seen to have

settings on camel humps, desired by separation.

The camels' forelegs carry her far away, yet her dwelling,

despite the distance, lies between my heart and breastbones.

Will I be brought to her love, after she has gone far away,

by swift camels worn down by long, barren plains?

They strain at their halters, as though they were,

across the desert, a ragged fragment of a scribe's writing.

Whenever they thirsted, I hastened to say

to my two eyes: 'Pour forth streaming tears,

so these may suffice them instead of what tastes good in thirst:

a watering-place's sweet, clear water for a drinker.'

And who will let me water them with tears, now that they have come

to reunite me with the budding-breasted gazelles?

There is no use in the nearness of homes, when they draw close,

if I do not find the bond of union drawing near.

May God pardon Layla, though her estrangement

makes me swallow the like of scorpions' venom.

How many a night have I passed, because of love,

keeping vigil with the lights of the piercing stars!

Even if between me and a visit to her there stood

the tips of tall spears or the edges of cleaving swords,

and fierce warriors upon every swift, leaping mare,

bred, as desired, by purebred, long-bodied steeds,

I would visit her protected grounds by night, heedless of spears,

which [unclear verb] toward me amid the dust of the battalions,

nor of a jealous man's fury among his companions,

furtively eyeing me with a watchful foe's gaze.

As though the very essence of glory lay in every charge

    into death, amid formidable defenders.

I battle them in the armor of my resolve, while

the rivets of my coats of mail resemble grasshoppers' eyes.

There I slay my adversary, resolute though he is,

and his followers in the clash, without fear.

And in fierce war I have never ceased bringing glad tidings

to the faces of my hopes, of attaining my aims.
