and with me, love's secret is never repeated.

And when the one with ulcerated eyelids complains

of longing's anguish, sleeplessness bears him witness.

Despite distance and prolonged separation, it yearns—

    this heart—for those it loves.

A heart where, all night, yearning is sparked

by firesticks for passion's fire, since they departed.

    And friends encamped in Najd—

theirs are my love and affection.

opposes what I wish, to follow what they wish.

My straying in passion—and I do not except

reason's fables—is, through them, right guidance.

When I speak to my heart of consolation,

passion says, 'Its appointed time is the Resurrection.'

And since they left al-Jarʿāʾ by night,

sleep has slipped away from my eyelids.

What have I to do with life, when she goes far

    from al-Khalṣāʾ—Suʿād, turning away?

Shall I foolishly return after she has departed,

trying to make lifeless things address me?

And look among the dwellings for a haunt of pleasure

where once my heart's desire had favored me?

    وهل فوقَ الذي عندى ازديادُ

    There is no increase beyond the longing I bear;

can there be any increase beyond what I have?

And eyelids, whose lot through separation has become

    unceasing tears, their ready store.

When I let them flow, I see a downpour:

showers of tears followed by showers.

And a sorrowful man wept over the ruins with longing,

with tears whose waterskins never run dry.

the water streams unbroken within them.

how then will he fare if separation lasts?

As though his heart bore the pricking of awls,

    renewed by sharply pointed lances.

O days of youth, may tears water you,

choking the uplands and lowlands with their flood,

like my tears the day you left, when my gray hair said:

'Youth, whose return you seek, has gone far from you.'

For the fire of its memory has a roaring breath

    that blazes between my ribs.

the black hair, for the days of its youthful ardor.

by his beds, and the pillow disowns him.

he settles on them, thornbushes had been strewn.

and every stouthearted man, unflinching in resolve,

    whose swordplay guards his honor.

Horsemen of every battle, where gallop

the noble steeds beneath them through the night of its dust.

They have brought them back, forelocks disheveled,

their breasts bearing crimson stains of clotted blood.

So never are they frightened, as other men are,

despite all hardships, by a crushing calamity.

If, after hardship, they were sent back to it,

even after perishing by its annihilating blow, they would return.

streaming down, deep crimson and rose-red,

whose fragrant breaths perfume the lands.

It is as though I were Quss in eloquent speech,

yet among you I have no Iyād.

With poetry whose surging sea is mine,

while others have only pools and scant water.

There is no inconsistency of rhyme vowels in it

to be faulted, nor any pre-rhyme discord.

So its two allies are forceful diction and meanings,

and its two companions are precision and soundness.
