Tears after loved ones part are no disgrace.

How long, then, your patience, as the riding camels are roused?

After the riding camels depart the protected grounds,

is there patience for parting's pain, or any peace?

Beside separation, every calamity is a consolation.

So let the tears pour forth in abundance.

    فُهِمَ الغرامُ وذاعتِ الأسرارُ

    Do not restrain their torrent for fear of slanderers;

passion is known, and the secrets have spread.

Stop with me at the ruins, that I may mourn what has faded

of them, now empty of all companions.

Dwelling-traces whose precincts were lit by union

and Nawār, aloof from all but my love.

Those are the dwellings: may their ruins never be missed

by steady rain and showers from my eyelids' clouds.

I ever dwelt in their courtyards among their people,

joyful of heart—and joy has its dwellings.

A dwelling where I reached the utmost of my hopes,

its people my neighbors before departure.

In days when I walked proudly in youth,

in a cloak's ample folds, never thinking it was on loan:

a cloak bearing the fresh charm of youth,

whose beauty's luster the ages swept away,

until gray hair's whiteness appeared; yet I found no charm

in the tranquility and dignity it brought to life.

And many a garden held me spellbound through the night,

with anemones and yellow daisies on either side.

The hand of blossoms embroidered its patterned carpet,

and the flowers flaunted their beauty upon it.

The breeze passed, perfumed, over its moist earth,

as though a perfumer dwelt within its soil.

Doves sang upon the boughs of its arak trees

before dawn, and a nightingale answered them there.

I turned away from it, after the dawn departure

of its people from those gardens, as they journeyed on.

I forsook it, while my heart, at their parting,

held, on their account and mine, a blaze and sparks.

And sleep, since the company left the protected grounds

and the beloved women went far away, has been scant without them.

Ah, by those brief days with them,

now gone—my heart still burns for them!

Days of union, all of them late afternoons,

and a time of pleasure, all of it nighttime conversations.

May I never stray from love's path, now that

my locks and sideburns have grown gray upon it.

My two companions, hear the complaint of a lover

whom remembrance has worn away since parting.

I have not forgotten your words that morning at Muḥajjar,

when saddles had been fastened to the pale camels:

Each day, among the dwellings, you have an eye

brimming with tears, though their home has borne them far away,

and a love whose passion and fire are stirred in you,

amid the dwellings, by reproach and the remaining traces.

And what is love but a heart beating

in fear of parting, and an eye pouring tears,

and the yearning of one robbed of rest, who almost

grows jealous when the breeze passes over the beloved?

How often have I heard passion recite to its people:

If only caution could avail in love!

As for passion, its nights of estrangement

are long, while the days of union are short.

Likewise, the dawn of gray hair is night, just as

youth's night is daylight to the eyes.

Youth has gone, and I do not think it will visit me

after departing, nor do I think it can be visited.

An age adorned with youth's radiance,

whose beauty held all eyes transfixed.

Who will bring me the first bloom of its days and season,

that age singled out above all other ages?

For it, when rejection's shadows gather thick within it,

there is a beacon, though the reproacher dislikes it.

    ما نالَ أيسرَ ما يَنالُ عقارُ

    And the wine of my verse rushes into minds;

no wine has achieved the least of what it achieves.

Verse that, whenever they recite it, seems

like a cup of wine passed round the gathering.

For poetry among humankind is a wrist,

and this verse is a bracelet upon it.

A tree whose luxuriant bough is mine,

and whose fruits are radiant meanings,

from every rhyme—how unlikely that one should see

dust from their course on the day of the race!

In her, great rewards are won,

and through her, sinful lapses are forgiven.

She has defied her suitors, for she is aloof,

full of proud refusal and aversion to them.

The choice is hers; no other has a choice

in all she desires and all she chooses.

Her song is the camel-drivers' delight; her recital

is for the night, which late-night talkers while away with her.
