وكانَ ذاكَ لا فرطِ الهوى سببا
How often I tried to rein my unruly heart away from you, yet it refused!
And that—not love's excess—was the cause.

خوفُ الفراقِ ولكنْ وجدُه غَلَبا
I wrestled with it, while longing's promptings spoke to me
of the fear of parting; yet its passion prevailed.

And before loving you, I had known it
to obey me, relenting whenever I reproached it.

When I fell in love with you, passion left me
no hope in anyone else, nor any desire.

O you who shame the sun, how many I have worn out since you left—
noble, nose-reined camels that know no weariness!

Chanting to them as they lean forward in the desert
is a driver who, when their yearning grows, heightens their rapture.

They fold up the wastes, while I never cease urging them
onward, demanding their utmost pace and trot.

Long-striding through the billows of mirage, you would think them
sandgrouse, hastening in flocks to their watering places.

O you who make tears cheap, these gray doves are cooing
in the moringa trees, displaying wonders in their warbling.

They lament, while dawn lies in the folds of its mantle,
and the wind has stirred the tips of its boughs.

And whenever they repeat their wordless song in the thickets,
they add flame to the blaze of my passion.

Our beloveds, why is no regard shown for my fidelity
to your love, when it has become our bond of kinship?

I seek your return, but separation stands
between me and you, stretching through ages.

You burdened me with something: if even its lightest part
befell Mount Ḥaḍan, it would crumble, or nearly so.

You have gone, and my eye's tears do not cease
after your departure, nor has my passion for you vanished.

My state has not changed, and my longings remain
as you knew them; the cord of passion has not snapped.

And amid the howdahs and caravans is a full moon of the dark night,
whose face, unveiled or veiled, fills me with awe.

When I describe my longing to him, confident
that he will ease my heart, he adds to its weariness.

She begrudged even false promises with which to soothe
a heart drawn to her despite her faults.

يلقى الخيالُ إذا ما جاسَها نَصَبا
And she made me endure traversing trackless deserts,
where even the phantom would tire if it ever roamed them.

Through them I urge a tall, sturdy, swift she-camel,
combing the wilderness in quest of her tents.

I seek from her, though she withholds herself, her teeth's cool sweetness,
for which I lavished wealth on her before separation.

do not reproach him: since they left, these tears
pay the dwelling its rightful dues.

ربعٌ ينوحُ على سكانهِ فاِذا

A dwelling mourns its inhabitants, and whenever
longing overwhelms it, it sobs amid its ruins.

No; nor is lightning, whose spark has flown
by night, more fiery than my passion when it blazes.

My breaths almost burn the dwellings, now that
the neighbors' drivers have urged the noble camels away from them.
