Does a tear of yours stream down every day,

and a heart lie aching from separation?

And a gray dove stirs the burning pang of longing and love

whenever she appears above the boughs, trilling.

And a hillside—when you greet its faded traces,

the loved ones’ desolate dwellings grieve you.

Dwellings! I grieve for them, now emptied

of their people: lovely summer quarters and fertile pasture.

I smell the soil of the ruins there; and thus

does a brother of longing act from excessive yearning.

I stood there, the streams of tears running

down my cheek, while the doves cooed.

From them came warbling; from me, over the cherished grounds

and their days, ever-growing lament and tears.

Never did doves coo among the moringa and ghada trees,

singing, without my eyes shedding tears

for neighbors who departed; since they journeyed far,

my eyelid brims with tears over their dwelling.

I kept faith with them, with those grounds and their days,

though they betrayed and squandered their pledges.

They lodged within my heart, beside passionate anguish and sorrow,

a blaze of longing at the hour of farewell.

    My tears do not cease, nor is my heart at peace;

my burning grief never dims, nor does my eye sleep.

Their memory is renewed for me each hour

by a heart enamored of the days of togetherness.

Before their people departed, I never knew

that I would despair when they left the valley’s bend,

nor that my old love-madness would be restored,

fresh as it once was, by the echoing cry of longing.

Among the things that grieved me was a dove in the arak grove,

lamenting, and lightning flashing beside it.

I answer that lightning with its like from my heart’s fire,

while this dove sings among the boughs, rending my heart.

And a woman spoke, when the tribe had left at dawn

and no hope remained of soon exchanging visits—

when parting and its doings had exhausted my endurance:

“Gently, now! How you weep, how you suffer!

As though you did not know that, in love,

you are sometimes tormented by it and sometimes given delight.”

I said to her, outwardly displaying fortitude,

while my liver was torn apart by its terror:

    وما كنتُ لولا البعدُ بالطيفِ أقنعُ

    “I shall be content with a dream-vision visiting me in separation;

but for the distance, I would never be content with a dream.

And I gnash my teeth in regret at parting,

over vanished union that will not return.

Yet my heart has never ceased to suffer

for the neighbors of Sal‘, whether they stay or resolve to leave,

    فما راقني مِن بعدِ ذلكَ لَعْلَعُ

    and for a dark-eyed beauty who left the spring grounds of La‘la‘;

since then, La‘la‘ has held no charm for me.

Nor has any place stirred my longing since she was sped

toward separation by the forelegs of thoroughbred camels.

Will the nights of nearness, now that they have passed,

so sweet in their hours of visiting, ever return?

And who can bring the place of meeting near, so I may complain

to her of what parting has done to me, while she listens,

and recite to her the far-traveling verses I fashion,

before which the noblest speech is humbled and bows?

In the people’s assembly they spread a fragrance you would take

for the scent of musk, wafting through its corners.

Whenever they hear our wondrous verse and extol

its beauties, I compose something more wondrous still:

meanings that are a vast, brimming sea, adorned

by language that is a broad, richly patterned garden.

Upon the brow of days, from the pearls of their diction

and gold, a gem-studded crown is set for all time.”
