I find life after al-Malikiyya no longer sweet,

and my heart is never free of tormenting longing.

And whoever has known beloveds, union, and love

can never forget or cease to love, despite the distance.

May God reward with goodness the time of union and its season,

and may downpours drench the dwellings whose ground they left.

    فمذْ بِنَّ عنها فهي مِن أُنسِها عُطْلُ

    Dwellings once adorned with beautiful women;

since those women departed, they stand stripped of their warmth.

And showers of my tears greeted their soil,

pouring in torrents over the dwelling's open courts.

    اِذا ما مضى سَجْلٌ تلا اِثْرَهُ سَجْلُ

    Their water overspreads the reaches of the groves;

whenever one downpour passes, another follows in its wake.

Tears for beloved women are no disgrace,

when nose-ringed, mature camels have carried them far away.

They have gone far; among the curtained litters lies a longing of mine,

which the great, wide eyes behind them recall to me.

I shall seek it on pale camels that devour the wilderness,

swift when other camels fear the trackless waste.

Lean mounts, worn thin by their swift pace; when they set off,

their haltered lope puts the male ostrich to shame.

They were bred—such as riders choose, eager

    despite travel's pain—by long-lipped Ghurayri dams.

Noble mounts of the stock of al-Jadil and Shadqam,

they would fly with us but for the reins and braided ropes.

When they see lightning, with darkness closing in,

flashing far away like a gleaming blade,

they start, as though the lightning had drawn its sword

against them, as roads stretch on with their riders.

Then they lope beneath the night, and the night is pitch-dark,

toward the distant goal, as the wolf lopes.

They speed love's riders toward the guarded pasture,

the wild lote and tamarisk before it already stirring their longing,

until I reached the clan; before its flock of women stood

defenders whose breasts rancor had set ablaze.

Firebrands whose livers I had cooked with rage:

every young man among them is inflamed by vengeful hatred.

They lower their gaze before me, yet it keeps turning

stealthily toward me, like the glance of a deadly serpent.

    فكيفَ تراه يصنعُ الرَّجُلُ الكَهْلُ

    Even their young one bloodies his fingertips in anger at me;

how, then, do you think the mature man would act?

So I drew aside the curtains of concealment, as though I

were husband to the woman behind them, though her husband resented it,

with a resolve that turns the day black and murky,

through which noble steeds and foot soldiers plunge,

and with good fortune: when their cavalry squadrons grow

numerous and we meet them in battle, they dwindle.

And if she is unassailable in her dwellings at evening,

we raid her haunts, and abasement falls upon her.

There is no shade except that cast by spears,

or by battle-dust; death beneath them both is an honor.

No meadow whose plants the clouds have watered,

and where the dew has scattered its necklace of tears,

with blossoms smiling throughout its reaches,

when drought afflicts all ground but its own,

its daisies opening to reveal the likeness of mouths—

and their likenesses keeping me engrossed in it—

can match Su‘da, when she showed her spaced, finely notched teeth

the morning we met after our union had been sundered.

Nor are rain-clouds, letting loose their downpour to water the hills,

like my tears just after parting, for separation is bereavement.

O my two reproachers, commanding me in matters of love

to do what I cannot accept—reproach has grown grievous!

Can I cease loving, when she has lavished sweet union upon me?

What you two seek has made even a child gray-haired.

Where, then, is my delight in nearness and its sweetness?

May I be bereaved of you both! Or where is what the messengers secured?

And where are the black tresses, appearing as though they were

black serpents that the luxuriant hair reveals to me?

If I do not honor my pledges, then may I be betrayed

by my love poetry about the beloveds and my vigorous, eloquent speech.
