Did the dove of the arak tree grieve you with its song,

as night cast off its black cloak?

It voiced its yearning upon the tender branches,

while dawn appeared from the eastern horizon.

It was as though, when you turned toward its lament,

it knew the passion within you and echoed it.

You recalled those of the guarded grounds whom you had never forgotten,

and once again scattered your tears among the ruined camps.

How often you denied your love for them, until,

when the doves cooed, love refused to be denied.

Then flowed your tears, which left

a mark upon your cheek that still lies furrowed.

And love sees in you—as knives pare away—

a body it effaces through the long passage of time.

    لولا الغرامُ لعفتُ ذاكَ الموردا

    After them, you took tears as your watering place;

but for passion, I would have shunned that watering place.

When sleep veiled the eyelids, love decreed

that you should spend the night sleepless and wakeful.

An infatuation that grows fresher with age,

and a love whose equal can scarcely be found,

and a yearning that brought you bewilderment,

with which no path to guidance can be found.

It overcame you, and you became hostage to its captivity,

walking shackled in its sturdy black iron fetter.

When the loved ones struck camp and left your dwellings,

you were found only wandering, looking about bewildered.

    أو أنجدوا عَطَفَ الغرامُ فانجدا

    If they made for Tihamah, your passion was the first to go;

or if they went to Najd, passion turned and went there.

Parting forbade you, on the day they departed—

while the pale camels were being saddled—to bear up.

So, from the pearls of tears, you scattered pearls

that almost lay in ordered strings upon the ruins.

In the camel-litters' wake you stirred a sigh

that spared the travelers' mounts the need for camel-song.

Burning pangs: whenever I said their blaze would cool,

the waters of the eyes made them blaze more fiercely.

And had time allowed union to return,

I would have hoped those burning sighs might cool.

By al-ʿUdhayb are gentle maidens, like sculpted figures,

graceful women who deliberately spill the lover's blood.

White-necked, wide and dark of eye; I am left

grief-stricken by my passion for them, despite the distance,

wasted with love, defying the reproachers; I did not heed

anyone who blamed me for loving them and called me foolish.

Separation has dealt cruelly with me; would that it

had never wronged me by parting us, nor transgressed.

The days of the beauties have faded; and whenever

time grows old upon my love, that love grows new.

    فعلامَ مالَ وحالَ عمّا عوَّدا

    Time had accustomed me to the sweetness of its justice;

why, then, did it swerve and change its accustomed ways?

O Hind, since you went far away, I have a moan

    with which I soften solid rock beneath the darkness;

and a wasted body whose illness has dragged on

    until it has wearied of sickness and its visitors;

and a creditor of longing that rouses—when separation

    stretches far—the trusty, powerful she-camel.

    فاِخالُها تطسُ الاكامَ خَفَيْدَدا

    She strides swiftly, while the midday heat spreads its canopy;

I fancy her a swift ostrich trampling the hillocks.

In a trackless waste where the sea of mirage has surged,

one almost stoops to drink from it, so fierce is thirst.

How wondrous your phantom, with deserts between us:

when it traveled by night, how did it visit or find the way?

May recurring rains water those haunts of yours that left

my heart a haunt for the fires of yearning.

And indeed, by the rodlike figures that sway from

the softness of bliss, bending before those present,

and smiling mouths, sweet at the springs of their glistening moisture,

    yet her glance's arrows barred all approach to it;

I was driven away from it, while in my heart, for its coolness,

burns a fire whose embers refuse to die.

Were it not for solace in hopes, and in their having

fixed a promised time for reunion,

I could not distinguish the day of their parting,

when they went far from me, from death itself.

O driver of the litters, enough! For these are

hearts that melt whenever you cross the open waste.

The riding camels travel by night through the wilderness; but had

my anguish struck them, they would not have stretched a foreleg into it.

They journeyed far, with loved ones upon their backs,

whom, but for their past kindnesses, I would have called enemies.

The season of union, before they went away, was

blissful; if they drew near again, it would return more blissful still.
